Russia has staked out plans to recapture its Soviet-era space-race glory and start mining the Moon for a promising energy resource that scientists say could meet the Earth's power needs for more than a thousand years.

Nikolai Sevastyanov, head of Russia's giant Energia Space Corporation, has unveiled plans to build a permanent base on the Moon within a decade and to start mining the planet for helium 3, a sought-after isotope, by 2020.

The idea would be to use helium 3 to power thermo-nuclear power stations, harnessing its potency to achieve nuclear fusion.

The technology to exploit helium 3 is still under development, but it has been touted by a significant academic school of thought as "the ideal fuel of the future" with several countries expressing interest. The race is now on to be the first to make it work.

Thats very unlikely. The moon is large enough for many nations to mine for resources.

weren't they selling acres of the moon to people a while back? You could buy a square foot all the way up to a few acres i think. I dont know if it was legit, but what happens if they build on some ones dirt?

It actually wasnt legit. Forget the details of the whole situation but I think it went along the lines that everyone owns the moon or no one does. So the buisness man sold the people a piece of paper.

You would have thought the world is large enough for us to live in harmony but look what's happening here.

Have any countries laid claim to the moon?

I mean... it's going to be hard to defend those claims. There is no government and no population on the moon. I say let its inhabitants decide what to do there... when it gets some.

You know you can buy land on the moon if you want.

But don't ask me where, how much, when and god forbid why.

sounds like the helium-3 is gonna be kinda exepensive to transport....it's not exactly cheap to get to the moon and back with the goods.

It would be far cheaper to put a mime on the moon.

I'd like to see the statistics for the costs of mining that kind of thing here.
