As China burns massive amounts of coal and oil to fuel its economic engine, each day is darker than the last.

According to readings taken from 500 instruments spread across the country, China is enjoying 10% less sunlight than it did just fifty years ago.

Making the findings even more startling is that this trend is coupled with a decrease in cloud cover. This leaves all the responsibility for the darkness at the feet of fossil fuels, whose use has increased nine-fold over the past half-century.

Expectations for the future are darker still. Scientists anticipate these problems will continue to worsen, and likely bring with it other problems like acid rain.
