That’s right folks. Windows Vienna is the new codename for Windows Blackcomb the successor to Windows Vista. Not much is known about Blackcomb officially and Microsoft is not ready to talk about it yet. However, Microsoft’s blogging guru, Robert Scoble confirmed in a thread reply to a channel 9 video, “since this video was shot the codename for Blackcomb has indeed changed to Vienna. I haven’t gotten the story on this yet, though.”

While Windows Vista is intended to be a technologies-based release, with some UI changes (in the form of the Aero set of technologies and guidelines), Vienna is targeted directly at revolutionizing the way we interact with our home and office PCs.

For instance, the “Start” philosophy, introduced in Windows 95, may be completely replaced by a “new interface” which was said in 1999 to be scheduled for Blackcomb, before being moved to the Longhorn project, and then back to Blackcomb. The interface involved some ideas based upon truely 3D Windows and an intergration of what is now known as Sidebar.

The Explorer shell is expected to be replaced in its entirety, with features such as the taskbar being replaced by a new concept based on the last 10 years of research from Microsoft’s “Vibe” lab. Projects such as GroupBar and LayoutBar are expected to make an appearance, allowing users to more effectively manage and keep track of their applications and documents while in use, and a new way of launching applications is expected - among other ideas, Microsoft is investigating a pie menu-type circular interface, similar in function to Apple’s dock feature.

All features are speculation and rumour at this point. However, with Vista arriving so late (5 years after Windows XP) - will Vista sell to the masses just as many enterprise customers have moved to XP and many home users are comfortable with XP. Time will tell.

What is the story with the seriosly crappy names and codenames? You think they could come up with something a little better.

The price for this still would be too high, DRM, copy protecting, and bugs are the reason that I not getting the new Windows.

Interesting to get another viewpoint.

I've just been benchmarking Vienna on my spare PC. Got it to install and boot just fine, runs fast if a little glitchy. Not too sure if this new file system is ready for general consumption yet and the smileys and nodding dogs are unlikely to catch on.

The great thing is though, every time you connect to microsoft your entire drive synchronises with the ms database, so there's no need to go through the usual rigmarole of checking for updates. Great feature.

Yes thanks to Windows Vienna I now know the optimal time to masturbate, Windows Vista only told me the proper way to wipe my ass. One day we’ll all be plugged into the MicroMatrix and the Gate Keeper can tell us how to do everything we think we want to do because we’ve been told to do so.

I’m sorry but I’ll take Newsgroups and Linux over the friendly multi-billion dollar user experience.

I think Microsoft always uses names of mountains in their codenames.

He means the codename Blackcomb, which is a popular Mountain Ski Resort in Canada...

he don't get me wrong but I really Like Windows and Microsoft when compared with sarcastic everyone else sucks Apple. I mean really Windows these days well XP atleast is solid and it just took a bit of time. But, as soon as Microsoft sides with the Entertainment Industry and not its users, I'm jumping ship.

I find apple is very user friendly and alot of idiots would benefit from an apple computer, although in terms of options you seem much more limited but thats a good thing for the average computer noob. We are probably ok for a few years but have any of you seen sony's patent for transmiting information to your brain? Now that shit is freaky.

Here's something I find very interesting....

One of the main reasons (at least I've found) people don't want to switch to Linux is because it's different (if you haven't switched, seriously, ask yourself why you haven't switched. I'm guessing, for the majority of you, it's because you don't want something different, whether it'd be the interface or the applications you're using). So, it should be interesting to see how well people adapt to a completely different interface, assuming they will at all. I can see it now: "Take away my Start menu?! How can I run AOL and Kazaa?!"

But, then again, if people feel they have no choice, they usually will make the leap - and, I think that's the main reason that's keeping people from switching to Linux and Mac - they don't have a reason to switch. Yes, Linux and Mac do offer many benefits over Windows (just ask any user - we'll talk for hours about it :) ), but, for most people, it's just not a "must" to switch. So, they don't.

And, btw, MorphineInduced, I doubt the main reason people aren't learning Linux is because the next Windows version has a cool code name :P

The main reason I havnt switched over the linux is the fact that not all my hardware have drivers for linux.. at least not last time I tried it as well as many games will not run in linux. I know alot of but many still dont.
