if you're using XP pro it has a file encryption option. I use to use a program called "Advanced Hide Folders" which not only password protects your folders it also hides them, opening only with a keyboard Ctrl + Alt + (your choice) + password. It's not free though...cough, unless you...cough...look.

ok here is what you need to do.
1) be running windows XP Professional
2) R-click on the download folder to remove read permissions from everyone but your account
3) set the folder to be encrypted with NTFS encryption

When I was new to computers, I didn't know anything about stuff like that. I was still married then too.
Had some files that the wife would be better off not seeing. So, I made a folder and named it "Janis Joplin mp3's", and put those files in it. The wife never could stand Joplin, but knew I was a fan. And she never questioned the existence of the folder, and more importantly, never opened it!!

What about this then? It creates a sort of invisible folder. It's certainly no password replacement but it's a step up in rainbows case.
Since the default folder view type is Tile and the most common folder view is Icon, you may like this...
1) - Create and new folder on the desktop and while the text is still highlighted, hold ALT and type 0160 on the numeric keypad. The name will now be blank so you can just click on the folder to set it.
2) - Now it's name is blank, all you have to do is change the icon (File > Properties > Advanced > Change Icon) and select the icon from SHELL32.dll that is completely blank.
3) - Posisiton your new found secret folder wherever you wish, I suggest in another empty folder to decieve someone who may be snooping. Hope you like.
