A friend sent me this link, http://www.geocities.com/yosponge/4or8.html, and I'm wondering just how good the info is. Can someone who knows computer security check this out and pass comment?

Some of the info is okay, DNSKong I wouldn't use, Proxomitron is old and I use Firefox/Adblock so I feel it would be unnessicary. Kerio is dead.

Some of his logic is weird, if I were putting together a 4 step "quick and dirty" guide, I'd make it "Firewall, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, Alternative Clients (Web and eMail)." not "Firewall, DNSKong, Proxomitron, Other things".

I second that. Crap Cleaner is good and free.

Use a good antivirus (I use symantec corporate), Use a firewall (sygate free version is good), scan your computer with adaware and spybot (both free), use firefox with adblock and filterset.g.

also if you use p2p...know the difference between an .exe file and .mp3, mpeg, .avi. Virus and trojans are usually mislabeled zip/rar files with a virus .exe file in them.

computer security is a very simple thing that corporations want to make difficult to understand to make $$$$$.

I'd second all that, Ne007 - the only thing I'd recommend in addition is AntiVir for antivirus. I've really gotten down on Symantec products (they just don't seem to catch everything), but so far, I've found AntiVir to be pretty good. Plus, it's free (legally!) - www.free-av.com

I'm just curious, why wouldn't you use DNS Kong? I've never heard of it before.

DNSKong adds no benefit over using hosts file blocking. And I'm not too fond of hosts file blocking in the first place.

Am I just missing it or does that guide really say nothing about running under a limited user account? Running under a limited account is the best thing you can do for system security.

user accounts are so damn limited that even changing a simple setting requires an admin account. i tried doing this with my wife some time ago. she is the spyware queen and believe me, it was in my best interests to limit her account, but user and even power users are just too restricted for this to work.

Running a limited account isn't for everyone, but how often does your wife really install something or mess with stuff that requires admin priveledges? Considering the average user doesn't mess around with stuff often I am assuming the same for your wife. If that is the case switching to admin whenever it is needed shouldn't be a problem. The average user spends the majority of the time browsing the web, checking email, instant messaging and downloading MP3's. Tasks like that should be done under a limited user account. Only switching to the admin account when needed. This is the best thing you can do to increase your computers security.

None of those are as important as running under a limited user account (though having an anti-virus is very important). Also, browser security all boils down to user intellgience. If IE is configured properly it is just as secure if not more secure then Firefox. Your browser of choice should be determined by personal preference, security shouldn't be a factor.

MS Anti Spyware is a great recommendation. For the less tech savvy the best anti-virus is avast! Not only is it free, but it is essentially set-it-and-forget-it. It has automatic updates, is easy to use, etc.

I disagree. AVG has consistently shown that its detection rate is very poor and AntiVir does not have automatic updates. I myself use avast! and recommend it to everybody who wants a free anti-virus. If you want to pay for one look at NOD32 or Kaspersky. Kaspersky has consistently shown that it has the best detection rate. Also, Kaspersky releases updates as often as once an hour, so the window of opportunity for new threats is kept to a minimum. NOD32 is known for being very light on system resources and its detection rate isn't bad.
