Friends: I am trying to convert my .avi files to DVD format. I tried Nero but I am asked to pay more for the plug-in. I tried Cucusoft from Shrink.com but I am told it takes 6 hours to convert the files to DVD format. Is there a better software out there I can use? Thanks a lot for any help.

Man, double-posts.....
Use DVD SANTA. Absolutely the best, and your 8 year old can handle it. Just enough options without having to be Einstein to use it.

How come you can download AVI files that are freely available, but your unable to download nero thats freely available and install it ?? Use nero vision express, or iMTOO converter.

My only gripe is it's encoding engine is v-e-r-y slow, and the video isn't exactly what you would call 'clean'.
I've said it once, so I don't mind saying it again:
Main Concept MPEG encoder is the cleanest and fastest DVD MPG encoder on the market. Try a like for like comparison. You'll need to run the output through a DVD authoring program once you've encoded your video, then burn it. Simple.

The standard in the US is NTSC.

Second that. Out of all the encoders Ive tried so far MainConcept's MPEG encoder is the best.

Because everyone lives in America.... and besides just change the drop down menu to NTSC if you happen to live in the US.

Let me know what you think, but don't try the trial version if you know what I'm saying. It has a crummy nag screen that displays over the picture. This thing is wicked fast!

I've been testing the WINavi MP4 converter for PSP/iPod/PPC, and it's damned fast as well.
I've converted about 10 videos of differing lengths, frame and bit rates, and so far it's been flawless. The audio is in sync and the aspect ratios are what they should be. I can't say the same about any of the many others I've tried (even Nero).

I was wondering. Ive made some great DVDs out of some of my old Divx files. I need to learn more about making DVDs out of say, A complete season of a TV series with multiple Vob files. I don't know much about DVD authoring. Need to read up on it. I would like to see how many movies I could put on one DVD too.

A blank DVD disk can hold min. of 3 TV episodes in DVD Video format, 4 TV episodes could fit but I don't recommend it!
Personally, I would just put 10 to 11 episodes on 1 DVD without converting as data disk. Then use DivX DVD player to play in DivX format. Save time & many blank DVD disks this way! :icon_thum

I have some friends I want to make a certian TV series of 18 eps for, they do not have pc's or dvd players that play divx. Each ep is around 45 minutes long. I was going to apend 3 of them together with virtualdub and make them a DVD set. Is there a better way if I turn them all into vobs first? Like add a menu selection for each. I have Sonic which will set up a nice menu selection with many features but when its converts avi's they are way too large. I can only fit one or sometimes two of these shows on a DVD. I guess I should read up on DVD authoring and stop wondering.

Usually, 1 TV episodes is approx. 41 to 42 mins. without those commercials in between. After converting to mpeg 2 video format, it will be approx. 1.4g to 1.5g. each episode!
I converted them to mpeg format first, so when you create menu you can use each chapter for each episode.
DVD author program will combine those mpeg files to create vob files of 1g each.
Instead of using WinAVI, I like to do it step by step so I've more control of how I want it to look like! It takes more time than using WinAVI, so it depends on you.

Yeah if I did convert to mpeg first, I could make a much nicer dvd, with menus, backgrouds, backgroud music and such. Too much work, their not that good of friends. lol

You gotta check out DIKO and make them a KDVD. http://www.vmesquita.com/en/download.htm
You can easily fit 18 eps on 2 dvd's, playable on pretty much any dvd player in the last 5 years, and the quality is perfect for tv shows.
The only downside is the overnight encoding length, and you need to use something like tmpeg dvd author, or similar, to make the actual dvd image and menu, though that only takes 15 mins or so.

Get Cucusoft Avi Divx to MPEG DVD VCD etc.. yada yada software. It will take a while to conver the file, because it has to extract the video + audio, verify it, then resynch it to a MPEG file.
After that is done (It will take 2-3 hours) get a program called IFOedit, search it on google, its free. it will create VIDEO_TS files ready to burn to DVD with nero, it doesnt take long, just a few minutes. just follow the instructions on both programs and yorue ready to go.
Happy pirating.

Use nero vision express to add movies to it. I put 3-4 movies on and keep the byte rate over 3000 if at all possible. DIVX has came along way. In the holder days divx uncompressed wouldnt go as high as 2gig, now a 700 meg file may go as high as 3.5 gigs Uncompressed. Use DVD9 if you really want to cut down the disc needed to hold them all.
