Alright a few things on my computer haven't been working. The first thing is the recycle bin (not a big deal but still) whenever I delete files, they never go to the recycle bin, even though I have the option checked to. The second thing is the disk defragmenter, it's no longer in the system tools folder in the start menu. And when I try to open it from the control panel I get an error that says "windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc. Make sure you typed the.....ect. The next error I get is when I try to go to the device manager in the control panel it just says "the selected file cannot be found" under the microsoft management console. I have XP home with sp2. I haven't messed with any files in the windows directory or the registry and it's the version of windows that came with my computer. Anyone have any ideas why it's doing this?

Sounds like a pain in the arse, formally known as a virus. Try doing a full system scan in safe mode.

Ok should I do both a virus and adware scan? I have avast and ad-aware. and how do I run windows in safe mode, I've never done it.

Restart you computer and before Windows loads, keep tapping F8 until a menu appears and just select safe mode.

And yes you should do both scans but I expect the Anti Virus program to pick up most of your Adware.

Alot of viruses may also mess with your virus scanner so you could try using these online virus scanners

Ok, your log looks relatively clean. There's nothing harmful but (off-topic) you do have a lot of unnecessary running processes.

It's possible you files are corrupted so do as silentscream already posted and run the System File Checker. To do this, open up run and type...

sfc /scannow

You may need your XP CD if you have one, other wise you'll have to direct it to your i386 directory (C:\i386)

And you can always reinstall Service Pack 2 to restore the files.

I did that scan thing too. It did bring up the dialog box to insert the xp cd so I did. But it still didn't fix anything. As with the running process, the only thing I have in the background is avast, ad-watch (ad-aware), callwave (I STILL have dial up believe it or not) so which process are unnecessary?

Were you doing anything at all before this happened? Did you install software/hardware/remove a virus/spyware?

Have you tried to use System Restore?

Andrew110

Not that I can remember...... and I turned off system restore a long time ago.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc

What happens?

I have a DVD writer so it wouldn't be too hard, I only have around 8 gigs of music and a few important docs here and there.

You're definitely missing a file then.

Extract this to C:\WINDOWS\system32\

For the Device Manager:

Extract this to C:\Windows\system32\

For the Recycle Bin:

Open a command prompt (Start, run: cmd)

cd \
attrib -s -h -r RECYCLER
rd /s RECYCLER

So is there anyway to fix them? And is there a way to find out if it damaged anything else I'm not aware of?

Well, the SFC should have caught these and any other missing/damaged files. I don't know why it didn't.

Bitcomet has been banned from many BT sites because the program needs tweaking. May I suggest Azureus or uTorrent.
