View Full Version : Problem loading LimeWire

lifehacker
January 3rd, 2006, 09:11 AM
I was running LimeWire 3.9 for a long time (and prior to that, some older versions of LimeWire), then suddenly LimeWire 3.9 stopped working. It would load but when the window was about to be opened the application crashed and ended without any notification. I decided to check if LimeWire has any new versions to upgrade to a newer LimeWire which might fix the problem but no, so I upgraded to v4.1 but the problem stayed and now as soon as I try opening LimeWire it gets to opening the window but then does not respond or crashes. Since Frostwire is very simular to LimeWire I decided to try it out, but the same thing happened to FrostWire as to Limewire! It got to the main window and did not respond.

Heres what I have tried with no success doing so far:
-deleating the .limewire data
-reinstalling java v1.5 offline
-downgrading to java v1.4
-uninstalling limewire and reinstalling it on a different hard drive on the same computer
-erasing all registry traces of LimeWire before reinstalling it again
-I do not run the firewall that came with sp2 and my outpost firewall was off when I tried to run LimeWire

Any suggestions are welcome.

Have you done any changes to your computer before this happened?

New hardware, new software, change any settings?

Lot and lots (unfortunately) of problems these days are spyware /malware inflicted so get a copy of Hijack This and lets see the log.

As you see the only interesting thing found was the NetSky worm file. I have a nasty hobby of playing around with viruses and trojans so maybe my problem has something do with that, but I ussually make sure the viruses I play around with cant harm my computer. :icon_pira

Well first of all, you have a RUNNING trojan on your computer.

C:\WINDOWS\kl.exe

WinTasks Process Library

kl - kl.exe - Process Information
Process File: kl or kl.exe
Process Name: Trojan.Anserin

Description:
kl.exe is a process which is registered as the Trojan.Anserin Trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. It is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.
For More Information About kl.exe - Get WinTasks 5 Pro Now!

Recommendation for kl.exe:
DISABLE AND REMOVE IMMEDIATELY. This process is most likely a virus or trojan.
Now using Hijack This, go to Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot...

Select the file in it's current location (C:\WINDOWS) and restart your computer.

Hmm... try this.

- Run a scan with Nod32 (http://www.eset.com/download/trial.htm) (crack is called nod32fix (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=nod32fix&btnG=Google+Search)@google), a-squared (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) (Free), and (Free). These tools are AntiVirus/AntiTrojan/AntiSpyware, to get rid of whats left of the trojan, and any other bullshit that might be on your pc.

- Uninstall LimeWire and Java using add/remove programs

- Manually delete these folders if they remain (and their contents):
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\.java
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\.jpi_cache
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\.limewire
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Sun
C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Program Files\LimeWire
(If you login with an account other than administrator, remember to just substitute the name "administrator" for whatever your account name is.)

- Manuall delete these registry entries:
HKCU\Software\JavaSoft
HKLM\Software\JavaSoft

- Scan with [url=http://www.ccleaner.com/]CCleaner (]AdAware[/url) to remove some extra junk from your machine
There are two different scans. On the left side when you open CCleaner there is four categories (Cleaner, Issues, Tools, Options). Cleaner and Issues are two different types of scans, run them both.
Cleaner: There isn't much to do, click analyze at the bottom, then run cleaner. Thats it.
Issues: Click "scan for issues" at the bottom, click "fix issues" when it's done, then click "fix all issues" when you get the little boxes asking you what to do.

Now you're going to be relatively clean at this point.

Install Sun Java (http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0_06-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg) (JRE 5.0 Update 6).
Install FrostWire (http://www.frostwire.com/index.php?title=FrostWire:Download) (instead of LimeWire).

Why FrostWire? Because LimeWire isn't going to remain free much longer, they have a special DRM branch they are waiting to implement, and will eventually filter out anything not containing DRM. Because of this, a group of developers have branched LimeWire Pro into an ad-free, DRM-free version that will never have DRM called FrostWire. It is reccomended to switch, because you'll have to sooner or later.

Nope, I still dosent work. After scanning with NOD32, ad aware, a^2, reinsatlling Java, removing leftover files and registry entries, and finnaly reinstalling Frostwire it still crashes...

Well I must say I'm stumped. This happened for no reason at all and it's not your java/virus/spyware/registy.

I'd try Gnucleus, it connects to gnutella and G2

Gnucleus was the beginning of a few open-source Gnutella related projects (GWebCache, GnucDNA, GnucNS). Gnucleus itself is a Windows application for accessing the Gnutella and G2 networks. One of the first released after the introduction of Gnutella in 2000 by Nullsoft (http://www.nullsoft.com). It is also the first client to fully support the G2 network, the future of open protocol P2P. Currently most of the development effort is going into the GnucDNA (the core of Gnucleus) rather than the Gnucleus interface itself.

Homepage (http://gnucleus.com/)
Downloads (http://gnucleus.com/update2/?M=D)
Change_log.txt (http://gnucleus.com/update2/ChangeLog.txt)

and doesn't use java :)

1. Uninstall Limeware "Desinstale Limeware"
2. Uninstall or remove old JAVA "Desinstale JAVA"
3. Restart computer
4. Download Java OFFLINE "Descargar el JAVA OFFLINE"

5. Install New Java "Instale primero el nuevo JAVA"
6. Reinstall Limeware (just after Java) "Luego Instale Limeware"

Enjoy :arms: Limeware

I Love you Colombia

Ive encountered this a couple times now in dm Server 1 where ObjectInputStream will use the classloader of the bundle who exports the class instead of the caller. Looking at the source code for ObectInputStream Ive tracked it down to a native method called latestUserDefinedLoader which seems to be grabbing the wrong classloader. I think a few other people have experienced a similiar issue. This more than likely is an issue with ObjectInputStream rather than with dm Server, but does anyone know a workaround?

This is also related to "Ehcache Persistence Class Loading Issue".
