is there anything to convert your movies to be mp3 compatible that doesn't cost you a lot. I have Windows 2000, and I really don't want to have to pay more money for my stupid ipod. I already shelled out a few hundred to buy it....anyone know of any programs that are free to download and use that can convert movies and DVDs to ipod format?

Im not sure if this will work for an ipod but I have a Pocket Pc and use a program called Pocket dvd studio to convert dvds, .avis and other formats to a format fit to be watched on a small screen. There is a free trial available so you can try it out first....

He didn't ask Google for the answer. He asked us. You should be flattered instead of dishing out the ol' cliches.
It's like finding someone who's choking and helping them by saying, "Just go breathe some air... duh."

That being said...

I've tried nearly all of the iPod video apps. PQ is okay, but there's no batch encoding. Xilisoft converter has worked for me a few times, but also have had some audio sync and aspect ratio problems. I think you may have to use GSPOT to check the frame rate of the video and match it manually.

The big winner, however, is Nero. Yeup, good ol' Nero. Nero Recode to be exact.

Nero Recode --> Record DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital. You can play with the settings to custom crop the black bars from a letterboxed video, and crank up the bit rate to 1500kbps if you care to (for television viewing).

Of course, Apple is happy to help you create your own iPod videos - if you upgrade to Quicktime Pro wink wink

Luckily, there are plenty of other simple options that allow you to convert your videos to create your own iPod videos for free.

If you’re a Mac user, Handbrake is an excellent choice. You can easily rip and save your DVD collection to your iPod with Handbrake. Not happy with Handbrake - give iSquint or MovieToGo a try.

If Windows is more your style, Videora or the 3GP Converter are both good solutions.

My new iPod converter of choice is the WinAVI mp4 converter. It's the fastest one I've seen in action.

I also like Apollo iPod converter, but it has a fatal flaw, in that some of its frame rate settings have odd presets, with no option to manually enter a frame rate.

A video with a frame rate of 23.976 will have audio out of sync within 20 minutes when encoded with the included preset of 23.975. I emailed Apollo support and asked them if they tested the app before selling it. They then replied with questions about digital video.... so... makes you wonder who's coding over there!

Thanks Guys, I'm going to try Videora. I have the 60GB Video Ipod and I went to the Ipod store today to ask them how to put movies on my Ipod. The guy told me he could not tell me anything, something about protection? I believe it had to do with the protection on DVDs now days, to keep people from copying them. I'll see if Videora works, and let ya'll know.

All the download services I use that are for free only hold 5-10 minutes worth of DVD footage, and most of them are included in the links you guys supplied.

And when I find a free one, there is a big watermark on the front that says Trial Version. Any help getting a perfect, free version?

If it only gives 5-10 min of dvd footage or gives a watermark its not freeware, its shareware.

For those that use OS X HandBrake is excellent for this sort of thing. After that just drop it into iTunes and if you right click the movie in the track list it gives you the option to convert it to work on an iPod. You DO NOT need Quicktime Pro to do this. Handbrake is also freeware.

Oh and this is my first post, so hi everyone...

If it was me, I'd go with a creative video mp3 player so you don't have to go thru this converting BS and just download DivX movies.

I care Kathy, but I'm confused. I started talking about the benefits of higher bitrate mp4 ipod movies but you seemed uninterested. Of course I care about what youre wearing and yes, you are quite attractive in the .jpg you sent me. But are you not at all concerned that unecessary pixelization might ruin the entertainment value of mp4 movie youre watching on your iPod?

BTW...I did get the videos you sent me....although I think youre silly for charging me for them. They mostly look good except for "wet_threesome_12.mp4". It looks like you should look into reducing your scene change interval in your conversion program. The large ammount of movement, and the contrasting skin colors of your companions really puts the mpeg-4 algorithm to stress. So remember, to get that smooth video for your ipod, raise those bitrates and lower them key frame times.

Well, I'll see if youre on tonight.
P.S. I think you made some billing mistakes on my card you silly thing you :-)

Many software can manage it, PQ DVD, Imtoo, Xilisofr, etc.
I have try all of them , i found Wondershare iPod Video Suite is best.
It is easy to use and the conversion quality is good.
You can learn more about it by refering here
