I was just wondering now that xbox 360 and newer consoles like the PS3 are trying to become so much like a computer...why do they not impliment being able to use a computer monitor like a CRT or LCD?
Would this be cost prohibitive??
I know that now they make High definition TV sets, but I think it would be cool to hook up a console to your monitor on your PC and be able to play games.
Opinions??

The 360 has an optional VGA output cable, which would allow you to use it with pretty much any monitor out there. However, the 360 doesn't support DVI (or atelast I don't think it does), which would be really nice for people with flat pannels with the digital input.

The dreamcast allowed you to hook it up to a monitor. I think it also just did VGA, but I could be mistaken.

The super nes once had a hook up for a monitor. I saw one hooked up once at an electronics store.

Yes, there was a VGA box. It allowed the output of progressive 640x480 as opposed to being interlaced, which gave it much better quality. Oh, and the dreamcast supported 800x600 and 1024x768 but I'm not sure how many games took advantage of those resolutions.

It doesn't support DVI or HDMI. That is, unless an adaptor is made. The component connections will support TVs with interlaced component video inputs including high definition ready TVs that support 480i and either 480p, 720p or 1080i component video signals. Movie playback is in 480i only.

You could just get a TV tuner for your monitor and hook up to that.

To tell you the truth, I never thought of that! But do you think would it have a signifacant "lag" in the video part because of the way it has to go through the TV tuner card first???

I did not know you could hook up a PC monitor to ANY of those consoles mentioned! Thanks for all the info everyone. But that TV tuner card idea...I may have to try that! I guess I would need a decent TV tuner card...any suggestions? I would like to hook up my PS2!

I really wouldn't suggest it. First of all, you'll be lagging like hell. The capture card has to process the data, which takes sometimes up to half a second (500ms), then the software on your PC has to process it, which usually includes a buffer of somewhere around 200-300 ms. So you're looking at about a second delay from real time. That might not seem like much, but you'll get your ass kicked in Halo having to put up with that. Secondly, a TV card will not improve the quality at all, unless you've got a spendy HD capture card. for most cards, you'll still be looking at 640 x 480 interlaced.
If you really want to use your console on your PC monitor, I suggest you get somthing like the VDigi VD-Z3, which takes HD component video and converts it to VGA to be used on your monitor. There's no lag, and you can get high res images. I got one for about $60, and for me it was definately worth while.

my gameboy can be hooked up to a computer monitor. I put the gameboy cartridge into the super gameboy cartridge and then hooked up the super nes to my video capture card on my computer which outputs to my monitor.

Thanks wonderboy! Do you have a good online retailer I can get one from?
I googled the name and came up with this link...but it just talks about the Z3...
