ntl has informed us that the 1Mb and 2Mb broadband speed tiers will go unlimited from January 2006 with no change in the price. This means ntl broadband internet subscribers on these speed tiers, can from January 2006, surf the internet and download as much as they like.

All ntl broadband subscribers are currently under a usage restriction that forbids excessive usage. Customers who ignore the restrictions and continue to go over the usage allowance, face having their broadband speed lowered to 512K, ntl wrote to us back in October and informed us that they were beginning to take action on persistant heavy users. You can read that news article here (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/200/ntl-to-downgrade-heavy-broadband-users).

When the ntl broadband usage limits kicked off back in February 2003, the usage allowance was 1GB per day – ntl later changed the wording from 1GB ‘per day’, to 30GB ‘per month’ to change the customer perception that they were allowed to download more than 1GB in any one day as long as customers didn’t download more than 1GB everyday.

ntl’s New 10Mb service will still have a usage restriction of 75GB per month (Going unlimited from June 2006)

ntl are also offering a free internet security tool called Netguard, for all their broadband customers, worth £40. Go to www.ntlworld.com/netguard for more information.

Broadband Plus is also being provided at no extra cost for 2MB and 10MB speed tier customers. 1MB customers pay nothing for the first month, then just £3.99 per month (£4.99 per month from June 2006 for 1MB Customers)

ntl tell us that they will be informing their existing broadband customers by e-mail and bill messaging during this month and January 2006.

I guess they're doing this to meet customer demand since NTL: Telewest customers get unlimited downloads, its only fair NTL: customers also get unlimited downloads ...

i would rather pay the same price for a 512 unmetered account than a 1-2 meg metered account anyways

then again around here TW roadrunner is burning up almost 8 megabit and i have never seen any caps.

I wonder if they'll extend that to Ireland. I'm currently on their 3meg a/c with 40gb cap.

I liike SBCglobal DSL.. 3meg download and no cap.. I constantly download 20 or more gigs a day 7days a week. And upload around 400-700 megs.

OptOnline is weird, unlimited downloading but uploading is sort of weird. The capping system is arbitrary.

They're increasing the speed to 15/2 for free soon, or I can spend a little extra and get 30/2 unmetered (with port 80 unblocked so i can host on my connections, but 2mbit up isnt that much, i wish it was 30/5... or 30/30)

All NTL 3Meg customers in UK are being upgraded to 10Meg for free this month, are they doing this in Ireland?

Also 1Meg & 2Meg customers are being upgraded to 10Meg for free next year too ...

Wow, a cap these days?

Most American providers have no cap, or it's unrealistically high.

With all the free media you can get these days, and the abundance of bandwidth the only excuse for a cap is greediness.

<-- /me gets 4mbps, no cap on monthly d/l or u/l, from adelphia.

Most companies in the UK place caps on their services.

Telewest, AOL, Be are the more well known companies who offer truly unlimited broadband and now NTL.

Be offer 24Meg broadband unlimited, very cheap too
telewest offer 4, 8 & 10 Meg unlimited to, they are cheap aswell
aol is kinda shit compared to the other unlimited services though ...

Im glad im an NTL customer, im not able to get Telewest or Be in my area ...

Sounds like a bargain? What's the monthly rate on that? Cable internet service alone is about $60/month here. The 4mbps package is the only service offered in my area.

Verizon DSL starts at $20/month though... not available in my area, but a good deal nonetheless. Speed is only around 128 or 256k...

Telewest are the cheapest in my eyes:

2MB: £14.99 per month
4MB: £25.00 per month (First 3 months £19.99)
10MB: £35.00 per month

NTL:

1MB: £17.99 per month (Soon to be 10MB)
2MB: £24.99 per month (Soon to be 10MB)
10MB: £37.99 per month (Soon to change to £34.99 in Jan 2006)

I'd rather be with Telewest, but only NTL cover my area ... shame!

I read somewhere that the NT: 250 modems sort the problem out that people were having with BitTorrent & P2P though some of the guys over at NTL are trying to figure what the problem is exactly.

Edit out the mac, mc and model number from that post though Dan ...

Apparently NTL Ireland have upgraded it to 6Mbps or 8Mbps? I'm not to sure.

Heres some more news for NTL customers in the UK, from June 1st 2006, 2Mbps will move up to 4Mbps and the upload will move up from 200K to 400K, at the same time 10Mbps will ditch the 75GB limit and go unlimited. All this at no extra cost.

This is just a taster of what's to come, NTL still plan to upgrade its 1Mbps customers to 10Mbps before the year is over, and apparently something "big" is coming before 2006 is up.

NTL are testing 100Mbps connections at the moment and apparently current 10Mbps customers will move up to 30Mbps current 2Mbps(4Mbps) customers will move up aswell.

The free 30Mbps upgrade is just a rumour from NTL employees.

Also, the 10Mbps service will see the upload move up from 512K to 1Mbps at no extra cost this summer, just not in June.

Any idea how this affects Telewest customers(if at all) as the two companies have merged?

And on a not so nice note
NTL are axing 4000 jobs in thre UK as a result of the merger!!!

Im sure Telewest customers will be upgraded to 10Mbps as standard too, since they're the same customers, but at the moment NTL are trying to get its services in line with those offered by Telewest.

Nice one.I'll be looking forward to 10Mbps!
but it is really the faster upload speed i need, for seeding torrents quicker ;)

ntl are working on upgrading their upload to 1Mbps, i'm not sure what ntl:telewest are doing but their upload is currently 386K, ntl is 512K ...

1Mbps Upload will be good for me, for torrents etc ... and sending people files faster on MSN.

Anyway, any updates will be on:

These upgrades are rumoured to be accompanied with some traffic shaping.

Vampmon
May 9th, 2006, 12:54 AM
Yeah, the traffic shaping won't be as bad as everyone thinks, it'll only effect P2P, bad yes, but only between 6pm-12am

The rest of the day and night they'll allow you to use it as much as you like
