According to a report from Merrill Lynch, published in Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai, Sony is set to lose over US $1 billion on the Playstation 3 in the year following its launch.
The report indicates that Sony may be willing to sell the console at less than the production cost - said to be around 54,000 yen (almost US $500) - in an effort to gain a significant share of the market.
Merrill Lynch predicts that Sony will launch the PS3 with a US $399 price tag - around US $100 less than it costs to manufacture.
The expected move by Sony is similar to the plan they implemented with the Playstation 2, which initially sold at a loss before making up its profits with the sale of software in following years.
Microsoft’s next-generation console, the Xbox 360, was also reported to have been released at a loss, rumoured to be at least US $126 per console.
Sony Computer Entertainment president, Ken Kutaragi, told Toyo Keizai that he believes price will not be such a big issue because people will want the PS3 no matter what the cost.

Hmmmm...I would like to have the PS3, but I'll have to wait for the prices to come down. I'm curious about the cell processor...hopefully they don't try some kind of rootkit on it.

its not the price that will bother me

I don't mean to be an ass, but do you know what a rootkit is? They are designed to give special privilages to people/applications that weren't supposed to. Thats useful on a PC (for sony anyway) because they could hide stuff from the user even though they aren't supposed to be able to. On the PS3 though, its their own hardware. they can put what ever they want on it... its their choice. They design everything. Besides, Sony wouldn't hack their own hardware... they'd just code what they wanted it to do in the first place instead of taking advantage of flaws in the design.

People are estimating an extra 10$ per game in the us. Altho for bigger blockbuster titles it could be as high as 20-30$ more

Not worth it. It will be interesting how fast it will take linux hackers to have the os running on the ps3.
