Utah Theater Cancels 'Brokeback Mountain'

SALT LAKE CITY - A movie theater owned by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller abruptly changed its screening plans and decided not to show the film "Brokeback Mountain." The film, an R-rated Western gay romance story, was supposed to open Friday at the Megaplex at Jordan Commons in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Instead it was pulled from the schedule.

A message posted at the ticket window read: "There has been a change in booking and we will not be showing 'Brokeback Mountain.' We apologize for any inconvenience."

Cal Gunderson, manager of the Jordan Commons Megaplex, declined to comment.

Gayle Ruzicka, president of the conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said not showing the film set an example for the people of Utah.

"I just think (pulling the show) tells the young people especially that maybe there is something wrong with this show," she said.
Can't shelter 'em forever.

January 8th, 2006, 08:01 PM
I won't see it because the theater near me is far to conservative, well, the whole town is, to show it. And with one screen, they've got an excuse not to - something else playing. Also I don't think I'll download it.

So no, no, no.
Comedy ftw.

I loved this film and I will probably see it several times. When it comes out on DVD I'll pick it up.

It is amazing to read all the homophobic comments here. You know what they say about homophobes, the most rabid ones are usually closet cases. Ask yourself, why are you threatened by a pair of cowboys that fall in love?

The director is the same guy that did "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The Hulk." This film deserves an Oscar.

Go ahead, flame me. I am comfortable with my sexuality, your comments suggest that you are not as secure. I wonder why.

You're not the only one... Gay jokes are more accepted in society than jokes that alienate other groups. I'm not saying it's okay, but that is the way it is. It's stupid, and one of the things that if I think about it enough, I'd rather not live in this society (because of all the intolerance of people that are different than the 'norm'). So I don't think about it that much...... I'd probably be dead if I did.

Yeah, that's very true. Remember the 40-Year Old Virgin? LOL, this is brilliant...

David and Cal Playing a video Game

David: No, I'm not gay I'm just celibate.
Cal: I think? I mean, that sounds ga- I just want you to know this is like the first conversation of like three conversations that leads to you being gay. Like... there's this and then in a year it's like, "Oh you know, I kinda wanna, ya know, get back out there but I think I like guys" and then there's the big, "Oh I'm I'm a g-gay guy now".
David: You're gay for saying that.
Cal: I'm gay for saying that?
David: You know how I know you're gay?
Cal: How? How do you know I'm gay?
David: Because you macramed yourself a pair of jean shorts.
Cal: You know how I know *you're* gay? You just told me you're not sleeping with women any more.
David: You know how I know that you're gay?
Cal: How? Cuz you're gay? and you can tell who other gay people are.
David: You know how I know you're gay?
Cal: How?
David: You like Coldplay.

David: You know how I know that you're gay?
Cal: How?
David: You like the movie "Maid in Manhattan".
Cal: You know how I know *you're* gay?
David: How?
Cal: I saw you make a spinach dip in a loaf of sour dough bread once.
David: You know how I know that you're gay?
Cal: How?
David: You have a rainbow bumpersticker on your car that says "I love it when *balls* are in my face".
Cal: That's *gay*?
David loses second match
shouts
David: Aww.

i might download it, pretty fucking brave of any actor to suposedly pull this movie off.

i dun see the vasy majority of gay jokes as offensive honestly, it's more or less for shits and giggles, and the fact that they have failry recently becoming more accpeted into mainstream culture, its sorta like initation, it'll probably tapper off easily within the next 3 to 5 years. Besides, who's to say they don't joke about us straight's, it's all fun and games. Will suck for the asexuals though, those guy's are in a tough spot.

I really enjoyed this film. It was in the top two films of the year. Heath Ledger was brilliant as a person repressed by his fears and social mores. The movie spoke of basic human yearning for what they wanted and could not have. Not homosexuality in the least. He wanted love. Man, woman, etc. People are not always able to get what they want or need.

This film was a frank portrayal of basic human needs and the fact that society and self are able to deny these things.

I would suggest people to see the film. I was a little uncomfortable; thinking that it was going to be an overtly agenda-driven film. Instead, I was touched by the story and was able to see the conflict in others much more clearly.

BTW... there is also much more female nudity that male for the homosexuallly-repressed/fearful.

SanDiegoKid

... it's very clever how the TV promos artfully skip over the subject matter...

"Heath Ledger is blah blah blah blahbiddy blah brilliant in the year's blah blah blah blah Ang Lee's blah blah blah..."

Homosexual subject matter aside, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal both suck.

... but what about Donnie Darko, you say?

Yeup. Sucked. Oh it brought the weird factor; I'll give it that. But that's all.

.. but Heath's performance in Monster's Ball was tour de force?

Yeah, he killed himself 20 minutes into the film. Thanks, Heath. You should try method acting so you don't turn up in "10 things I Hate about You 2: The revenge".

These assholes are Oscar fishing... personally I would prefer to see them play retards.

he was good in the lords of dogtown movie... I didn't even know it was him until the credits rolled, really freaking random after he did those b.s. pseudo - lord of the rings meets van helsing underworld type schlock movies [a knight's tale, that movie where he was a priest hunting vampires or some b.s.].

In other news:

Willie Nelson Releases Gay Cowboy Song

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Country music outlaw Willie Nelson sang "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" and "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" more than 25 years ago. He released a very different sort of cowboy anthem this Valentine's Day.

"Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other)" may be the first gay cowboy song by a major recording artist. But it was written long before this year's Oscar-nominated "Brokeback Mountain" made gay cowboys a hot topic.

Available exclusively through iTunes, the song features choppy Tex-Mex style guitar runs and Nelson's deadpan delivery of lines like, "What did you think all them saddles and boots was about?" and "Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out."
