Phase One 39-Megapixel Camera

"Don’t get me wrong, I’ve used my fair share of digital cameras in the past, but honestly, who the hell would ever need a 39-megapixel camera—except, of course, for VERY VERY detailed porn.

This P45 camera by Phase One is capable of capturing at 35fps and a write speed of 20MB/s. Yeah, 20MB/s sounds good and all, but not when each picture is 117MB in size. At this point these kinds of cameras might need to look into using a hard drive system, because memory cards would be really inefficient. Oh well, whatever floats your photogging boat.

Gizmodo readers, let me know, what the hell kind of picture would require a 39-megapixel camera?"

I'd love to see a sample of it. Shit, if it was my digital camera card, I'd barely fit one.

Just another example of the "more is better" psychology. It's like the guy I saw the other day. He was driving a Toyota. In the back were these humungous speakers, like a d.j. would have in a hall or club. And, he had it cranked up so that the fenders and bumpers looked like they were going to fall off. Did it sound good? Not in that environment. The same goes for the camera. A professional photographer, sure. Someone like you and me? What the hell for? And, while we're on the subject: who the hell needs to carry 500 songs with him/her while jogging? This is getting absurd.

for the naysayers:

I read a magazine article (wish I could remember which magazine) about a guy who turned an old spy plane camera system into a portable (he designed a tripod that, when broke down, could be used as a wheeled cart for the camera assembly) system. They had a two page spread photo of the ocean, the beach and the cliff behind.

There were some sky divers in the air, just specks in the shot, but they blew up nicely with no loss of clarity. And, in doing so, they saw that there were some guys perched on the cliff looking at the beach below with binocs. So then they checked the beach though there was nothing but sand visible in the primary photograph.

Turns out it was a nude beach. At full clarification you could make out nipples.

So, don't say there is no use for such a high resolution camera :icon_pira

Wow and i thought my 3mp camera was good quality. With pictures that size there gunna have to make bigger camera cards. Aby professional photographers out there to clarify why you would need 39mp?

I don't really know at this point. But that might fit under statements like:

"Noone will ever need anything bigger than a 640k harddrive"

and

"Noone will ever need more than 32Mb of RAM"

If you absolutely need to take a three story photo of a ladybug... this just may be your camera.

a 39 MP image of say... a whole city from an aircraft is not that far fetched.

I wonder if I put it real close it can see atoms!!

117MB pictures... they sell 8gb compact flash cards now. That's plenty of pics.

I don't think a flash card will cutt it, especially with a rate of 20MB/s. I think micro drives are in order for this.

JVC has a 20 gig camcorder.. I think its awesome to put 10 hours of video on it rather then 2-4 with DVD-r that sony has.. 39 megapixel is gonna take up alot of memory card.

Realisticly this camera is pretty much only suited for commercial photography. Either for billboards, large banners etc.... Although it could be used for everyday photography it really isnt needed. Unless you want to take random pictures and artistically crop out sections of the picture.

pretty high-tech... soon there will be cameras that will automatically enhance your appearance- erases wrinkles, subtracts extra pounds and deducts years, until we all look like either brad pitt or jessica alba.

Ummm...considering that this was posted two years ago, the $33,000 price tag has probably come down considerably. So look into it, Mungo.
