if it's a dorm/ college, it sounds like a packet shaper

if it is you are screwed

packet shapers are the ultimate weapon (for now) against p2p in campus computers

anything suspicious is blocked, and the IT guy has total control over it

Yes it is a dorm , and its my laptop connected to an ethernet adapter via usb.

my connection is ethernet , and my dslreports.com benchmark is ~ 500 kb/s

but as i said, when i dl from file sharing progs i get less then 1 kb/s .

no firewall.

its strange cuz i tried several p2p progs, just in case kazaa was blocked or sumthin.....the packet shaper makes sense......

but if it is the problem...could it detect ALL p2p progs?

and is there NO way around it?

and is there any other possible problem?

Note....i tried another laptop with a pcmcia ethernet card...and same problem.

can dl files from website fast, but not p2p...... average p2p dl rate 1 kb/s

thanks

The problem would exist on any computer from what you're saying. There's nothing wrong with the PCMCIA card if you get 500kb/s on DSLReports.com. I guess you could try HTTPTunnel or find some proxy to connect through.....although notbob's mention could also be the problem.

Also keep in mind not all people do have ethernet. Sometimes people with a 56 k modem also participate in the p2p world. Dowloading from the internet is faster i guess cause the sites you dl it from have more advanced hard/software then the poeple that participate on p2p

furthermore it is upcomming in more and more clients to have a participation recator. it means the more you share the higher youll end up in the p2p community the more lines you gett

for example look at the participation thread in kazaa lite now a days's

or read the forum bout filesharing in unitthecows.com

Packetshaper is easy to get around.. We've been able to get transfers to/from someone who is behind a tight firewall that uses packetshaper/packeteer with my project.. maxed out my connections D:600kbps/U:128kbps ;) - peace!!
