View Full Version : Many private sites are banning all BitComet clients

This is a report I just read from Oink.co.uk. Turns out a lot of sites are following their lead, here's what Oink said...
We are following the example led by other private bittorrent trackers and we will be banning all BitComet clients imminently. Perhaps having so many sites banning it will encourage their developers to do something about it.
The reason why: BitComet, like Azureus, allows the sharing of peers via a DHT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_hash_table) system. Azureus implemented SecureTorrents (http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/SecureTorrents) into their client, which we coded into our tracker. BitComet followed and implemented a similar private (http://wiki.bitcomet.com/help/Tracker_HTTP_Protocol) flag. Unfortunately, the BitComet authors decided not to code what they said ("BitComet will not add DHT Network as Backup Tracker even all the trackers can not be connected later, and will also disable Peer Exchange between peers") and instead ignore this flag after a period of time.
If the BitComet developers create a new version which behaves as it should, we will happily change our stance on this. But at the moment, BitComet is not welcome here.
If you want a replacement client, Oink.co.uk and myself recommends µTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) and Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/).

Surly they are not banning the software because you can cheat. You can cheat on azureus anytime you want without getting into trouble. what's the difference?

No, it's not because of cheating, it's something to do with the DHT implementation of it. Check the first post, it explains it in non lay'man's terms.

Ok, from what I understand.... they are banning bitcommet because it allows exchange of tracked torrents by outsiders. Whereas, Azureus is coded to not allow distribution of torrents coded as private through dht.

AFAIK the individual users on a private tracker still need to set Azureus to only accept connections from the private tracker. Also, by default Azureus publishes to several public trackers. I believe that this will not allow people to necessarily share the private torrent but it does make it much more visible. You can often find info on torrents from places like bitme and oink on public torrent searches; it just won't allow you to leech them.

If the private flag in a torrent is set, Azureus will NOT share it via DHT and peer exchange regardless of the user options that are set.
BC, however, chooses to ignore this flag after a while and will begin to exchange and share torrent/tracker information.

ah. then that most likely explains why I sometimes see private torrent info listed on public torrent search engines. Thanks for the info crestfallen! I've been wondering why this happened.

Thats why i get so pissed off about it. People exploit the program where it ends up getting peoples bt clients band. If i was a bit comit lover and someone exploit it and then i couldnt use it again. I be pissed. It encourages people to share and actually speeds up everyones completeion rate.

Hello
I have a question
I use Revconnect for downloading from hubs, at this moment. I've heard about Limewire, that it is very good for file sharing. Are these similar? And if they are, which one is better?
I am not even sure if Limewire works with hubs :icon_scra
