View Full Version : defragmentation Q

Str8 to the point, upon defragmenting my various drives today I encountered following scenario: After defragmenting drive x I let windows analyze the same drive x for defragmentation, and it said degfragmentation was recommended..Im like w00t?! Didnt I just do that? Oh well, Im no nerd so I defragmented the drive again..after quite another while and some more changes in the visualization bar it (again) says Done..I, however, analyze the bastard again and it STILL says defragmentation recommended! So, Im like okay, is this normal? because it never happened b4 to me, nor now on the other drives..How many times is it normal to have to do it over? And obviously, is there a better idea than defragmention through Windows systemtools, that would eliminate this hassle?

After you defrag, reboot and analyze it again.
What OS you got?

I never used 2k, try what I posted above...
also if you have a scan disk, do that before you defrag.

YEAH, There are other defrag util out there, Try out Fix-It utils, you can get it from FOSI. (http://www.linkworld.to/fosi/)
It does a great job of error corrections, scandisks, and defrags.
(FOSI tells U to enlarge Ur Penis - Do it just for having fun)
I agree with Krell - FIUv3 was having quite a wothless defragmenter, but ver4 (which has a great autoupdate facility) is worth trying.
In most defrag apps U see the graph of clusters/fragments and U should have at least 20 % of free page at the Partition X U R defragmenting, otherwise it won't have a good success. If too full partit, then just move some big grab elsewhere, before starting. Also if X is Ur system drive, U will notice at the graph, that there are a lotta unmovable chunks, which are currently locked and if having swapfile at that partit and run windows for a while with many apps open, U propably have unmovable stuff there too.
So, best Idea for successfull defrag is to (re)start win2k, temporarily disabling all the startup apps and as many services as possible before starting.
P.S. at FIU4 there's a good virus clinics with memscan and registry compression tools and many useful disktools etc
Good work from OnTrack as always....(I should be their sales representive?)
P.S. U did not tell, whether Ur part is FAT32 or NTFS, NTFS is a bit more kinkee when allocating stuff.
P.P.S. I have started to use Diskeeper v7 (full), it's code has been married to Win XP as GatesWarez, so it can't be bad. It really has a good analyze and is extrem.simple.to.use.
And U can set the % when it starts to complain; Most defragmenters have buil-in % of over than 97 % - that sucs. One has to able to tell the app the ratio by experience....
P.P.P.S. If having fixed size large swap on part X, then Kill it before defrag, set it at another part, do the defrag and set it back after - It will now go to clean continuous clusters, after that move Ur Big files back (if they were transferred somewhere)
A long story, so is the defrag, if partition X is large and has muchos defragmentos...
Peace (Now and Forever)

This and much more I said at my reply a few posts up - just read it - it's not just for win2k - it aplies to WinAll versions !
And not just for Fix-It Utils, but all defragmenting including Windows's own...
(All except closing down services - that's 4 NT/2K/XP)

and yes, I read them and I am only happy that some have taken the time to elaborate on the subject. To answer the main qs, Im on 2k, ntfs, drive X is not the system drive and there is 5 giga/32% free space. I see several have mentioned closing the silent runners so I will try that, and I think I should have a look at FixIt, if its too complex for my needs I will check O&O, I suppose both FixIt can be found on Kazaa?..oh yeah and a reboot didnt change anything..

5 regular posters and only 4 brain cells between them.
Which catecory You should put me on? I Post to many threads, that makes me regular poster, but I have allways something to say outta my brains...(except this one, which is just a question for my lowered ego to rise up a bit)
P.S. my finnish english is not always too clear, so I apologize if someone does not understand all my typos i make with my police-academy 3 and a half finger technique...
Peace ! Now and...i've said it too often (must move it to the bottom) :wings

I Know, I Know - No Names here - I think that those one-line commentors and FU's will find out who we're talkin' about.
That is one reason, why people has made new forum places to go for talkin' more seriously and having no need to jump-over the dummy posts. These few parallel forums are good places to get real info and the indian-chief "nottin' bulls" is a fact there ;-)

For sure we could start a "Defragmentation Thread" with a poll somewhere upper there :
1. I Defragment All My Drives Every Day and Sleep That 6 Hours
2. I Use Five Different Defragmenter to do My Job Well
3. I Hate Defragnenting Because You Like It
4. Whattaya Hex is Deffgabnenthing ???
5. No Need to Defragment, I Format My HD's Every Week !
And so on...
(and warm here too, but I just lost the oxygen, because my dog made a HUGE Fart...)
Peace ! Now and Forever

weeell hell..it is much to the benefit of us lesser worms to have such tech capacities around..However, the help shouldnt drown in falling turds from high horses eh? know what I mean..I appreciate the elaborate answers and I choose to think the reason for your discussion about 1 liners and mofos WITHIN MY THREAD isnt indicative of your opinion about me. I can assure you I carefully read what anyone of you have written to me. However, to return to the subject at hand, knowing now that there is "only so much to be said about defrag", I must ask, can I conclude that my specific prob is a result of bad win2k sys tools, and only that, and all I have to do is use fixit and not worry about it? Or is my trusty ol'Compaq in fact in great peril and about to die on me and you forgot to mention that in the midst of your fireplace conversation? I mean, Im amused and can agree and I like marshmellows too, but dammit my comp keeps wanting to defrag that drive when I analyze it and I still dont know WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!

Reboot your computer in safe mode and run scan disk, after that defrag. Now it's correct. And very good idea, too, to get rid of the startin' apps / services. At safe mode it's a bit of slower, when real-mode disk-drivers are not loaded...
Still : Worth to try out....
P.S. If U reallyreallyreally need a clean disk : Burn da staff (compressed) to CDR's with NTI Backup NOW! Deluxe, run verify to check that data is OK at CDR's and do the Format X: - thing, then Restore with NTI, for sure U now have contiguos allocation and defragmentation of 0.1 - 0.5 depending the Cluster Size versus Small Files Amount...
Hey - I'm serious : dun that, been there etc..
DO NOT USE Drive Image Pro - it will restore all da fragments as they were...Dun that tooo...
Peace, h2o & p2p & defrag

my word, you sound like a mad scientist....well i didnt understand a bit of that....but them i am an ignorant fool when it comes to technical stuff.....
anyway, this has been a really informative thread.......i thought defragging was just a case of going to accessories once a month and clicking on the thing there, now i know better.
good work guys, keep the info coming, i learn as i read. :goodjob

I'm Not a mad scientict nor scientologist, more like computer enthuciast, that have spend 25 Years of life with those bastartds, never seen "a final product" and will never see. As in our world, everything evolves too fast, only our brains are capable of accepting all that stuff, still being quite a monkey level in many things. So am I i.e. when talking about washing clothes or cooking. My old mother still comes every few day from 1 mile away bringing me home-made food, just to trying to stop me using my microwave-owen with $2 1minute foods. As a divorsed single parent of my two "almost" grown-up children I really am at some hurry all the time - damn they thief my time to become a whole-day PC-geeg-freek...
P.S. Are U a real communist or just makin' fun with Mao and Che-Quevara to get us confused. I used to be a communist when I was about 18-20 Y old and had so great ideological picture of this world. Now at 43 Y I don't belong anywhere specially, rather to the growing num of people having thoughts of Everlasting Soul, Ehernal Love, Regeneration and a piece of God in our souls...
(NO - I wont put myself to a category of New-Age - they have some odd thougts and those spiritualist rituals) I rather feel free to be myself, not cloning anyone's ideologics...
Now I seem to jabber too much things not belonging to any of these threads. That's me again ;-)
Peace & h2o & p2p & sharing
