As of a couple hours ago I can't get audio from any kind of files.MP3's and wavs won't playand I get no audio from divx, rmvb, etc. while the video plays fine. This happens with VLC,WMP,MPC and Jetaudio. In Jetaudio the equalizer graph is active.(As if it's playing)

I uninstalled the AC 97 audio device and reinstalled with no joy. Then I decided to see if I could get audio from my tuner card(hooked up to cable)and I can.

The fact that I get audio from the tuner card(which has an output to the aux jack on the mobo) and nowhere else must mean something, but not to me(at least when I'm this tired)
Any ideas anyone?

It has onboard sound obviously.

Check your vol control (sndvol32) and see if any of the playback lines are muted.

I had checked that earlier and the wave and line in sliders were down all the way so I reset them to the max.I think I got distracted after that but when I went to check again after zarquons post they were back down.I rest them again and was able to play a file with no audio problems. Then I closed the file and tried again and the wave slider had gone back down.Looks like experimentation time.

I agree, I have a new soundcard on the way but that's not the problem.Somehow I lost my realmedia codecs.I uninstalled and reinstalled realalternative and am good.I have no idea why it was affecting dixv files though.
This is a new system and still has a few kinks.I'll probaly reinstall the OS when I get my sound and video cards and RAM next week.

EDIT-And the MP3's didn't play because I was trying to play something I had just downloaded and itwas a crappy file.Frigging edonkey. When you are tired and you get 2 different problems like that at the same time it sucks.Thats why when I get to the point were I'm dangerous I turn the computer off until I'm rested. That way I can't hurt anything.

This was happening to me a while back, its a problem with either the tuner card or a media player from what I could deduce. I never did however find the root of the problem and as I was about to reinstall windows anyway I didnt care to kill myself over it. But I also have ac97 audio card so this is catching my curiosity.

Nuke, you need to completely uninstall that card go to manufactures website and download any new drivers. From the sound of it the software isnt digi signed right? I had the same issue with a tv card and after completely uninstalling and physically removing and then reinstalling the PCI card the problem solved. What sucks is i have to control my volume through windows instead of the device. A sys restore may work but chances are it wont. From the sound of it the card is being used as the default device to play all your sound files and obviously it cant do it. What's the make of the card and what OS are you running? I wouldnt mind helping you as it took me 2 days to straighten out my problem. only after the drivers were updated did it function and still not correctly....at least the damn thing works now make sure you remove everything related to that in the device manager before a reinstall. Check your file associations also

It was just the realmedia codecs had gotten corrupted somehow. It seems to be fine after I un/re-installed them before my previous post.I don't know how they got corrupted in the first place but I've been doing a lot of tweaking on this OS.Probaly to much.

Was it the real alternative. Because if it is that makes all too much sense and my problem was probably exactly the same.

Was it the real alternative. Because if it is that makes all too much sense and my problem was probably exactly the same. You know that Real player causes havoc on Win OS's. I as well have the alternative so far it's going ok but jesus id stay away from Real full version. My buddy had it keep trying to take over file associations. I told him to 86 it and no problems since.

I almost forgot when all this happened were you running out of disc space?

I always keep at least 20% free on my primary partition.MR-yes it apparantly was Real Alternative.I used it for a few years and this is the first problem I ever had.I probaly screwed something up tweaking the OS.I've been to dependent on using images instead of a complete reinstall and I probaly went overboard playing around with all the settings.

EDIT-What I meant was although using images is easy and fast it is not as much fun as building from the ground up.Of course the point of all my tweaking is to get a new image that reflects this months favorites.

sorros, I follow everyone on this site, even the dipshit fanboys, and I read almost every single post to this site.

If youre going to post tech help, I strongly encourage you to slow down around here and think about what youre saying and start supporting it with facts.

When soomeone like Nuke encounters a file association problem, he does not need to uninstall his card and install new drivers, and this is easily solved by installing Ace Mega Codec packs etc to reset all codec handlers.

Slow down, and watch what you post, so I dont call you on it.
