View Full Version : Too Hot Xbox 360! Overheating problems

Forum posts are suggesting early teething problems for Xbox 360, with some units overheating. All hardware launches are afflicted by a small percentage of problems; and it seems Xbox 360 is no exception. The forums today include some irate Xbox 360 owners who are experiencing overheating problems, likely to do with the hard drive. One owner claimed Microsoft had stated it had "received numerous calls". Here's what they had to say. We're awaiting a response from Microsoft.
TomStrong at GA-Forum wrote (http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=72274&page=1&pp=50)
"I play Kameo (interesting game) for about 30 minutes and the 360 crashes!!! Ugh.... Power adaptor goes from solid green to a flashing orange.... What next? Well, shoot off an email to MS, get one back not too long ago, find out that the flashing orange means that Xbox has overheated!
Zeebo at Xbox Scene wrote (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=461074&st=0)
"I just received my Xbox 360 today. It was freezing cold so I let it sit for about an hour. Plugged everything in got it up and started playing COD 2. I completed training and while it was loading it just went to a black screen. I waited for awhile and nothing happened so I turned it off, let it sit and turned it back on. I turned it back on to 3 red flashing lights. The top left and the two bottom.
"I found out that it's the hard drive. They said they have received numerous calls already. I unplugged my hard drive and it worked fine. Put it back on my box and red lights again."
Reaver at TeamXbox wrote (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=392011&page=1&pp=15)
"It worked when I set all my settings up. But I put in PGR3, it freezes when I get to the menu, did it 3 times. I put in PDZ, it freezes in the menu."
Yannira also at TeamXbox wrote (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=392003)
"All five of the games I bought freeze up after a few minutes, I am assuming because of the 360 heating up. It gets unusually hot, the game discs as well are red hot.
This is all to expected. Early morning glitches are a guarantee but everybody still rushes to buy them.

Exactly.. YOU BUY it on Ebay for a couple grand.. You only get the retail price back.. What a bunch of losers.. Dont let your kids talk you into buying crap.. Just keep playing the older game systems til the second-third generation consoles come out. They will have alot of problems in the first few months.

Glad I didnt get one, geeze, Id be pissed...............main reason I dodnt get one is no MOD chip yet, and with games average retail at what 69.99, its just ri-godam-diculous, also backward compatibility is limited I've read, so all the hundreds of games I've got would be left out in the cold, but I guess if the new 360 is overheating they could huddle around it to stay warm, I think I'll wait a few months before I get mine.........

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The cost of building a Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 video game console is nearly 40 percent higher than the retail price, technology and microchip research company iSuppli said on Wednesday.
The firm estimated the total cost to manufacture and test a premium Xbox 360, the software giant's sleek and powerful new gaming machine, which debuted on Tuesday, was $552.27, compared with its retail price of $399.
Microsoft aims to sell about 5.5 million premium and lower-priced basic Xbox 360 units by the end of June. The machine will compete with the PlayStation 3 from Sony Corp. (6758.T) and Nintendo Co. Ltd's (7974.OS) Revolution, each due out in 2006.

The xbox emulator for the xbox 360 currently supports 200 titles and more will be added over time. Theres a list floating around just keep an eye out for it. As for the MOD chip its just a matter of time.

Oh yeah... My modded xbox is without a doubt my favorite toy. Everyone who sees it and plays it loves it as well. Having upwards of 2000 older video games makes boredom a thing of the past. And if you have a bigger hard drive or a DVD burner, xbox games and movies are just as acessable. The ability to mod the xbox to the extent that you can has really changed my viewpoint on consoles. I think from now on, I will be waiting atleast 6 months to a year to buy a console so that I can see how 'moddable' it is.

i wasnt aware so many titles are backward compatible will have to check it out, either way, once a MOD chips out Im on it, though curious about the overheating glitches, but Im sure they will be worked out by then......

Dude your so on the mnoney, got an emulator a while back that has all the gameboy games for shits and giggles, and nothing spells fun like the BAED playiing old school frogger with some friends over some beers..........
Question? You familiar with the "Unleashed" method of cramming multiple games on one disc, creating own wallpapers and adding a gameshark for loading on the game disc? Everytime someone comes over that MODS and BACKUPS games, they always trip out......anyways heres a piece of candy, though you may already have known about it.............XBOX - SKY (http://bt.xbox-sky.com/) best place Ive ever found to find "game backups"......

I know it is. I actually bought a modchip within 3 days of buying the xbox. Im installing it on the weekend when I get some time. I've already got like 6 games I acquired from "friends" to test out. I'm pretty psyched. What are the best disks for burning xbox games onto as I can't quite afford a hard drive just yet.

Lets ruin the video game market too, those freakin' pricks. "Never bought another xbox game again" thats a good start. I bought an Xbox 6 or 8 months ago and lots of cheap games, I refuse to download games, I just wait till theyre super cheap. They get my full support in putting the smack down.
Edit: I do however support MAME in the respect of old defunct systems or old games that are past their prime. Ms Pacman still rocks!

For DVD sized games and/or other media, either DVD+R or DVD-R (Not sure about RW formats) should work fine. For CD sized files however, your best bet is to use RW media. Some Xbox drives have a hard time with CD-Rs, and some, like mine, simply won't read them at all.
As far as modding goes, I am preferential to the soft-mod technique. When I first did it this summer, I had my xbox modded within 2 days of getting it with no prior experience or knowledge on the topic. Ideally, it should only take about an hour to accomplish once you have all the required files.
On a final note, you'll probably want to install a new loader/dashboard app. I'm not sure of the capabilities of the default dashboard with a mod chip, but you'll probably want more. I strongly suggest XBMC (xbox media center). I've used dozens of apps on the xbox, and it is by far the best looking and most feature rich app out there. I'm sure you'll like it.

If you need some help with getting games up and running, ie emulation disks, unleashed multi-disk(>1 game per disk), or gameshark trainers on the discs, let me know...........also theres an article I did a while back here about XBCONNECT that allows you to play XBOX Live for free with a Modded XBOX.........
Thatreminds me too, when I get back home Im gonna start up a new GAMING TAB that is Xbox specific, so that instead of generic PC or online gaming have a place to talk about Xbox specific stuff......

Cmon guys! Please from now on dont buy a new release gaming system until they have been on the market for a while and the respective companies make the needed modifications. You have plenty of time to either return the shitbox 360 sell it on ebay or return it for a full refund.

XBCONNECT = a poor man's xBox live. While it was kind of neat to play Halo 1 online, umm, 2 years ago... xBox live is vastly superior. In fact, I'm gonna kill myself for even using them in the same paragraph. Please do the same.

It shows disdain for them. Which, apparently, is cool. I guess. Meh.
