ok, i give up. i've googled adware and spyware sites to try and supplement what i've got now (avg free, adaware, spybot), as i know there's stuff my current programs aren't catching. i update and scan like a maniac. even use trend micro every now and then. i've been to a lot of the sites recommended on here, but most of them will only scan for free. they've all shown stuff i have to be rid of, but hey, you have to register and pay before that happens. grrr. are there any programs other than what i already have that will actually remove spyware, etc. for free?

They only have their hand out if you try to subscribe to the automatic updates, and that is something you can easily do yourself.

This is not the kind of (not so) responsible reporting we need.
Spyware Blaster has a very effective free service. This is not like Spybot and Ad Aware in that it does more to prevent spyware than the Immunization features on the other apps.
If you look at the list of blocked spyware and sites that Spyware Blaster prevents, you see immediately that there is benifit. You can update it all you want to, you just have to click UPDATE manually . . instead of Auto Update, is that too much to ask for a free effective program?
An ounce of prevention . . . . .

and Krell, if I ever meet you in a dark alley :devil2
btw Something as simple as StartupMonitor can be effective in stopping crap from running on startup. I've had this running unobtrusively in the background for 5 years, always doing it's job. http://mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

OK, but again, if you weill simply USE the features of the apps you already havem then you dont need all these 3rd party softwares battling it out.
Spybot Search and Destroy already has the ability to remove unwanted Start up items
Also, those of you that installed the Ace Mega Codec Pack . . . look in Control Panel.
See the Tweak UI icon? Guess what it does?

.
Startup is the thing that works like Spybot for removing unwanted items...StartupMonitor runs all the time like Spyware Blaster...it prevents spyware, trojans, and things like Quicktime or Realplayer functions from ever putting themselves in startup to begin with. I get the 2 programs confused myself ;)

Im not confusing them, but again, if you want REAL TIME protection, use the Tea Timer in Spybot, it gaurds everything.
What im getting at is, ive seen people, like janet99 have 6 or 8 different spyware and cleanup programs, its mindboggling how people function this way.
Youre suggestion is a good product no doubt
