I came across an interesting link to a Linux based program (http://ipodlinux.org/Video_Player) that allows users to play raw .AVI files on their iPOD nano, the first I've heard of such a capability.
Try it out and tell me what you think. For the easy on the fly way way to test drive before even checking into it, heres a link to a sample video (http://booc.coob.org/ipl-videoplayer.mp4) .
Also here's a list of supported iPod types:
1 First/Second Generation : iPod with Scroll Wheel/Touch Wheel
2 Third Generation : iPod with Dock Connector
3 iPod Mini
4 iPod Mini Second Generation
5 Fourth Generation / U2 : iPod with Click Wheel
6 iPod photo / Color iPod / Color U2 : iPod with Color Screen
7 iPod nano
8 Fifth Generation : iPod with video
9 iPod shuffle
