Negotiators at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society said they had agreed to set up a forum to discuss "spam" e-mail and other Internet issues and explore ways to narrow the technology gap between rich and poor countries.

But oversight of the domain-name system will remain with the United States, a setback for the European Union and other countries that had pushed for international control of one of the most important technical aspects of the Internet. The European Union said in a statement that the agreement would lead to "further internationalization of Internet governance, and enhanced intergovernmental cooperation to this end".  &quot

In the short term, U.S. oversight is not immediately challenged, but in the long term they are under the obligation to negotiate with all the states about the future and evolution of Internet governance," said a member of the EU delegation who declined to be identified. The U.S. said the agreement essentially endorses the status quo.

It should be pointed out that ICANN is a private company. The U.S. government has absolutely nothing to do with this company. The U.N. wants to 'govern' this. They want to take something which is regulated by a private company and give contol to the likes of counties such as Russia, China, and France. We all know how tolerant those countries are on the free flow of information.

So why is everyone making such a fuss about this? Do you oppose private corporations having the ability to make a profit? Do you realize what types of taxation domain names avoid using ICANN, since it is not a socially govererned entity?

These are things to ponder, and I see no reason why I would need the UN to register my domain name. Currently, I get my domain for 2.99/year in the U.S.

Could you imagine what type of corruption could arise out of U.N. controled internet? As if Oil For Food wasn't enough for us to render the U.N. completely corrupt and useless.

I totally agree, what these countries are tripping out on as that the internet over the years has become vital to a great many economies and I think they're afraid that we can "pull the switch" or be a dick at whim. But the altrernative being an org that can barely hand out rice is a bit scary.

Does anyone remember Rwanda? Didnt see the UN do shit, nice to see this is worthy of their attention.
