Problem with my ISP and Bittorrent

Recently I signed up for Verizon DSL. But once plugging everytime up (Modem directly into the computer) bit torrent had slow speeds (5kb/sec) while on my old Knology cable, speeds were pretty fast (around 30-120 kb/sec depending on peers and seeders.) I'm not running a firewall or anything, as of now, and everytime I do a firewall/NAT check on Azureus I get a NAT error. I went through the guides for quickening BitTorrent's speed, but nothing seemed to work, I'm not using a router or anything so I'm wondering what the problem could be.

I went through the guides for quickening BitTorrent's speed, but nothing seemed to work, I'm not using a router or anything so I'm wondering what the problem could be. try changing ports to anything over the 60,000-65000 range for example 62374... somethings wrong because with DSL your speeds should be faster then that! also check your BT clients download settings, make sure there not limited. I would also take a hard look at your Network Connections through the control panel and uncheck QOS ie Quality of service because they may be limiting your download speed.

What speeds are you getting from http:// testmy.net ? What modem do you have ? Many are not aware but some modems have NAT functionality that can be disabled or port forwarded.

Id also try rehhoking everything up, ie reseting modem, unplugging, removing ethernet cable from PC, and reset everything back, and then start over, that way you can rule

everything out step by step, also is your firewall up to date? you said its off , but sometimes Ive noticed that if you dont renew the subscription, the firewall locks up to prevent

acces to the internet as a way of "protecting your PC".......also use SORROS advice about changing port settings, very important.........speed of 5kb/c is just lame, should never

be that slow......I know a "guy" whose downloading 50cent bulletproof for XBOX his is going at 140kb/s with 40 seeders / 20 leechers, also try the Verizon website too to see if anybodys had the same problem.............

And before you even think of trying to give me shit about what your speed is, you establish that you know the difference between kilobits and KiloBytes.

You didnt even mention which BT client that you are trying, or if you tried more than one.

Did you read my posts, making reference to the 4226 errors? Is all your upload bandwidth being used? Do you have an antivirus running in the background, or anything like McAfee or Norton Utilities? ICF is OFF?

Did you try a torrent that is a KNOWN GOOD speed demon? I dont want to hear about your raggedy assed 5 seeders for 1800 leechers POS, give me something to work with that has some meaning to it.

If you want any REAL help in this thread, bring it.

I'm sure my ISP has put some kind of limit on my bittorrent downloads. I just want confirmation:
Is it possible for an ISP to put download speed limits ONLY on Bittorrent? How do they know its bittorrent and not some other kind of P2P download? I say I know because for the last 2 weeks my downloads on Bitorrent have been considerably slower than they were before while all other forms of downloading are not effected. I've checked this with all 5 computers in my house and everyone is experienceing the same thing, so I don't need unhelpful comments like "sometimes bittorrents are slow, live wih it" . It happened after the internet connection was reset, I assume by the ISP. Is there some software that will actually show this limitation at work?

Most likely, download a torrent file and rename it to something.. And open it up with Bit Torrent and let it open that kind of file.. I heard the canadian ISP is limiting it, and this is a work around for it.

. I guess they dont want the help! In order for people to help you need to go through the trouble shooting stage. Otherwise we can only take a guess which is basically worthless.

Ya im not sure about shaw, it seems like my downloads are slower from sites like torrentspy or thepiratebay but im currently downloading linux fedora core 4 at 100kbs so im still not sure if shaw has or hasnt capped torrents.

they have limited both download and upload, but upload is the more obvius of the tow, on my end at like 12 kbps.
My download speed seems to download at around 200-250kbps max.
Would just simply renaming the torrent work? I havn't really played with this.

renaming the torrent wont do anything as they are reading the packets coming trough to identify the traffic. Then it regulates it.

Serrbi101 you have although made me kick myself as it makes sense why my download is slow on public trackers as my upload sucks its affecting my download. Wereas with linux they dont care about how much you share. The only other noticeable differance ive seen is with newsgroups you used to be able to have unlimited multiple connection now its max 2 connections per user.

For Rogers people having problems:

1. Switch to BitComet 0.60
2. Turn on encryption
3. Use Port 1720
4. Download the .pimpie file instead of .torrent .pimpie file is for pisexy only, and instead of downloading the torrent.. Its the same thing with all of it, just renamed that and you choose which program to open it up with.

Shawners Is BitComet better then Azurus and another thing you must understand one of the reasons behind your slow downloads could be in result to low seeders. If a file has a low seeder ratio your download will be slow.

Im pretty sure ports over 60,000- 65000 are considered private. So this may help setting the ports differently. I know in bitcomet this is easily done. One other thing you can try is limiting your upload speed when downloading multiple files.

For example:

Your downloading this

File 1 max upload speed 5 kbs

File 2 max upload speed 5 kbs

File 3 max upload speed 5 kbs


Take your total upload speed and simply divide so each file is allocated at least 5kbs. It's also important not to max out on your upload as bittorent needs a certain amt of bandwith overhead.

Finally complain to your ISP!!! & try to find another provider that isnt throttling your bandwith.

on another note, if you take in account everyone doing what sorros is suggesting.. Every bt file will be slow in downloading. I havent used bit comet in awhile. But know that there could be a solution to speed it up and still have upload speed of 20-30kbs.changing to random ports above 33000 or 60000.

Very true that's why it's important to increase your upload speed after your done downloading select files!!! I try to share at an even 1 to 1 ratio in effect i give what i get. However if i think a file is important for the community i will share way more then that!!!

For me Bittorent is all about the honor system I know there's alot of bad apples ie. people who snatch and run im certainly not one of them nor do i suggest people to do so what's fair is to make it at least even trade.Currently im downloading a new file that just came out and fully expect to upload 4 times as much as what the download was.

Shawners is there a private port range in the 30,000 level? I was led to understand it was only from 60,000 to 65,000+........I also periodically switch ports just in case of throttling. My isp claims they dont do it but after examining BT for a while im convinced there full of baloney.

It's probably best to just phone your ISP and tell them about this issue.

Chances are, the modem/router they gave you has a limit on the number of NAT firewall rules that can be created and when the limit is reached connections start being rejected from any more requests to the internet or something silly like this.

Why would the limit be reached? Because torrents use hundreds of connections at a time and if you got thousands, well rest assured your probably maxing out the firewal rules.

Doesn't happen often, but it's possible.
