View Full Version : Sony CD Spyware Seems to Breach L.A.M.E. Copyright

Jared Moya
November 14th, 2005, 01:02 PM
L.A.M.E. is licensed under the so called Lesser Gnu Public License (LGPL). According to this license Sony must comply with a couple of demands. Amongst others, they have to indicate in a copyright notice that they make use of the software. The company must also deliver the source code to the open-source libraries or otherwise make these available. And finally, they must deliver or otherwise make available the in between form between source code and executable code, the so called objectfiles, with which others can make comparable software.

Sony complied with non of these demands, but delivered just an executable program. A computerexpert, whose name is known by the redaction, discovered that the cd "Get Right With The Man" by "Van Zant" contains strings from the library version.c of Lame. This can be conluded from the string: "http://www.mp3dev.org/", "0.90", "LAME3.95", "3.95", "3.95 ".

But the expert has more proof. For example, the executable program go.exe contains a so called array largetbl. This is a part used in the module tables.c of libmp3lame. This discovery can have far-stretching consequences for the music giant, who claims only to protect copyrights. Previously, judges in Germany already forced various companies to release source code to the public and to deliver the goods necessary for compiling.  It is also possible to demand financial compensation for damages. Meanwhile, Other details are also becoming clear.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation complains that the spyware makes the legal listening to the music on iPods impossble. The organisation is busy making a list of cds containing the hidden software and publishes this on her website.

Nothing.

I want to read the complete article from it's original source.

.I was on him earlier about this but he didn't get the hint.

Or maybe he did, but since he's Jorge's buddy, he could be just like him and not really give a shit.

They mean could you put the link to the original article at the bottom of these posts instead of links to the news articles on the Zeropaid News section. For instance...

Will fix right now, and yes the link to article should be auto generated in the "news" submission template. Anyways, links click fine in Firefox for me, but from now on will include seperate submission in text itself........Jorge is in Frisco will get to check out when he gets back......

November 14th, 2005, 06:00 PM
No no no now you have two links in the news article that work fine but for us who read your posts in the forums the link is still fucked up. All it does is loop to zeropaid news dept article which we have already read as a post.

fuck will check out again, thought it was link in homepage news not thread generation, fuck thought Jorge fixed that anyways, have gone back and fixed thread, will monitor in future...thanx again for all the loving constructive criticism....ha ha........the problem lays in that the news template is supposed to auto generate a link to article at bottom of thread it generates, it was working, but apparently no more.......let me know when this happens again, as Im sure u will, and by the way, talked to Hunter about creating or selecting an OMBUDSMAN position of some sort to help address day to day shit that occurs rather than having to wait for him to get in gear or having Hunter do all the work by default, let me know what u think or if any of you are interested.......thx again Jared

I like soulxtc.So do I.

So far he has been able to find and post some diverse news with newbie enthusiasm. And it seems he has some inside skinny on getting some stuff done. But the real test is time. How long will he last until he burns out? Only time, and the continued neglect and disregard by management, will tell.

He both knows, and sees Jorge often. That alone should be a big plus. He posts a lot of things, but that is his job. Dont get me wrong as he is trying to get things right, and has been very helpful through our conversations. Any problems between him, mods, and regular members I will do my best to work out.

Good point about burnout, but hey as a nurse in the real world, if 12 years (6 navy medic, 8 civilian), if the sight and smell of, and pardon the graphic image, of an 80yo vagina i have to catheterize cant burn me out, then Im home free. All the stuff done here and in the P2P community at large is stuff Ive been doin on my own for years. Thought I could help out Jorge who asked if I was interested at a party I threw. If anything its like Hunter said, I actually SEE Jorge, go to his house etc., so when u guys need stuff adressed let me know. You guys have been here long before me, and maybe even long after, you guys ARe Zeropaid. Thats why I listen, I understand the importance and truly want to help make this place better for us all, otherwise whats the point. Like I said, got a suggestion, complaint, concern, cool porn site links? Drop me a line my bruddas.........Jared

I've mulled over that "liaison" idea as it pertains to you for weeks now.

On the face of it, maybe it's a good idea, however I am not really seeing the benefits of this yet.

There is, and always HAS BEEN, a large gulf in what goes on in these forums, and anything to do with Jorges participation, or contribution. Obviously you had to dig deep enough to find my reference to an absentee landlord, and have some fundamental understanding of these differences.

I'm not convinced that you would, or could, burn out here. To use your 80 yold vagina analogy, I want you to consider what we as a community and the mods especially, pay, endure, suffer and sweat, to keep this a file sharing community that is not over taken by special interest groups, and persons who just do not belong here.

When you see the mods warn and ban these people, I want you to realize, that these same people, MOST of the time, are the SAME PEOPLE over and over and over again!!

If you see Larry Moe and Curly get banned, you just think to yourself - ONE person.

Administration needs to keep this SITE functioning properly, and provide the functionality that fits the forums, THIS is where the bread and butter comes from that pays salaries and buys equipment, pays for office space etc. It is the ongoing dynamic of this forum that generates the google spider searches for others to click on, if we stop building this dynamic, the site ratings GO DOWN.

The way we keep this dynamic going, is to cull thru the dipshits, and keep a certain level of committed participation. When the regulars burn out, and the forums are deluged by newbie asshats, the forum suffers, and so does site sponsorship etc.

If you want to be, or think you need to be an ally that can somehow lobby for the best interests of this site (which I mean "forum"), then heed my advice, and do just that. Trust the judgement of the moderators, and watch the dynamics from a broad timeline perspective, in order to have focus on what is going to live on here, and what needs to take a hike.

To continue with the 80 yo vagina analogy, its funny Krell cause I used to think you were a dick, but now Ive realized that without dicks thered be no pussies, and whithout either we'd all be androgenous anuses. Wait does that make me a pussy? Fuck, well there goes my brilliant analogy-esque-soliloquy. (ever seen Team America)

Anyways, understand trends are important, i.e broad timeline based, as in my line of work, a pt asks whats my BP? Is it bad? Fuck it dont matter what it is second to second, but you have a high BP over months, etc., then its of concern.

As for benefits, didnt I help get "Grab the Haddock" back on? Ha ha. Anyways, I got a to do list of a bunch of shit to go over with Jorge when he gets back from Frisco. Any suggestions? Give em' up now while its convenient.

And I like that one somebody sent me about putting a wet bar in here..............

One thing that doesnt go over too well, and in fact like a lead balloon, is when someone runs to administration to complain about a decision, and that decision gets an over ride.

As far as admins go, I think you should have a full hands off of the forum operations here, and stop medling in the consistancy and judgement of the mods who have put THOUSANDS of hours in! And that's PER year.

When an asshat like Hornet runs crying cuz we booted him, ignore him empirically. It is wrong to undermine what the mods are trying to hold together here, "consistancy".

The other item I find noteworthy, is that on some issues, there is never a response, ever. You could write your name in blood and not get a reply from Jorge. Now sippin sissy drinks in the Ca sun sure sounds appealing, but if youre not going to support the forums, and the mods, then keep with the trend and not medle in the forums at all, we will handle things appropriately.

I would consider trusting the mods opinions to be important, and letting a festering boil on sharepros ass back in because he went and cried is not encouraging. Us mods do discuss things, and frequently ask another mod why so and so was banned, and consider if it was needed. In this case it was required, needed, deserved, and so on.

Redesign pages? That's the least of our interests. Don't give me a new smiley face icon when you undermine what makes this place Zero Paid.

Jorge has offered trite remarks about "the real Zero Paid" and I honestly am not sure he even knows.

All you have to do, is BE HERE and read the threads, you know, "New Posts". It's riddled with conflict from a few asshats so 90% of the efforts here get expended on 2% of the population.

*me pretending to be Jorge*

Bandwidth utilization has gone own since I restricted the ability to add images, therefore I dont need to upgrade yet. Oh, and I see Hunter and my mods have things all under control, GREAT JOB! They offered their time for free, and got rid of 8 dipshits that no one else liked, WOW that must be great for the site, and I trust their judgement impeccably.

*back to sissy drinks*

Get the picture? You want real examples, paste them from the anklebiter threads to have to mod day after day, like fishing in a barrel. Don't try to be supreme court, use PerfMon and Filemon, and keep this place accessible, and let the mods DO their job, for free.

Roger that, like I said I'm not here to reinvent the wheel, I just want to help make this place better for all. To do otherwise would be stupid on my part as it only undermines the whole point of trying to make a healthy contribution to the site. I could simply do nothing and ignore all, that'd be easier, but thats just not me. If all those years I spent with a bad haircut patching up marines taught me one thing, its to stand up and be counted, to do what needs to be done.

surely Im aware that the powers that be (ahem.....Jorge), isnt exactly timely with his suggestion box, that being an understatement of great proportions apparently, nor is his exact "vision" for the site clear, but thats what Id precisely like to change, all the while leeting "benign neglect" reign in the forums where the veteran MODS have the breadth of experience and vested interest in running themselves.

Id like to help, nothing more, nothing less, how many of you can say you at least see Jorge, let alone go to his house? So, as one with such access to the "ears of zeropaid" its incumbent upon me to do for others what they cannot do for themselves.

Its kinda funny, I never really even had a desire to be involved in forums, other than occasional misc software questions, of any kind before Jorge brought me on board, shit didnt even know what "NOOB" meant for the longest time. Anyways, just wanna say its been cool, though my girlfriend thought I was a frickin nut for typing angrily back and forth with Krell one night (note to self no more drunk PM'ing) all drunk, but like Hunter told me, theres a good group of guys here and hes right. If you guys were pricks I wouldnt give a shit about trying to help out, Im here for content not to fix problems neglected by mgmt. But you guys, most of you anyways, Grab the Haddock really gets to me, are legitimately cool and intelligent people, you dont find many people like that on the streets these days. Shit more than half never heard of the Civil War, its scary.

Anyways, got something you wanna see done or not done? My PM box is always open, and if your ever in sunny San Diego, sissy drinks on me (does light beer count).

Yes, we would appreciate your assistance here. What I hoped was that your experiences gave you a tactical and decisive nature, and you would come up to speed with how the site needs to respond to situations.

I would never want to mod here again, but I am vested in the day to day operations. If you would please assist in the ongoing efforts to provide continuity, and consistancy, you will have my support in matters pertaining to the well being of this nut-house, Zero Paid.
