According to a final order issued by the Federal Communications Commission in late September, all broadband Internet service providers and many Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, companies will have 18 months--until spring 2007--to ensure their systems have backdoors that allow police to eavesdrop on their customers' communications for investigative purposes. The 59-page order (click for PDF) followed years of pressure from the FBI, the Justice Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. It would broaden the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), an 11-year-old wiretapping law that currently applies only to "telecommunications carriers." The FCC has justified the expansion on the basis of terrorism and homeland security concerns, echoing Bush administration officials who have warned, for example, of the perils of VoIP services in rogue hands.

We can't have all those nasty terrorists running around making internet phone calls without the FBI having a way to listen in on their diabolical plans.

France has
...higher life expectancy
...lower infant mortality
...half as many tv sets per capita
...higher literacy rate
...lower total crime and murder rates
than the US. Sounds pretty good to me.
Austrailia, Canada, France, UK or even perhaps Japan... all seemingly great countries to live in.

I agree, malakai. France is a wonderful country to its native citizens and those with the wherewithal to look after themselves. The reason for my including it above is, quite simply, the recent ongoing unrest and riots currently going on there. and, "for gods sakes" was meant as a sign of exasperation- I apologize if it was not as obvious as I meant it.
and my issue with maquerautin's statement stems from the "any country is better than this one". any country. There are damn near 200 countries in this world and you have named 5 that have the same, or better, standard of living as the United States. You are obviously intelligent so I will just say that I would appreciate it if you stop being disingenuous.

Yeah I'll back down from this argument, my point was just that yeah, the US is a great country, but that doesn't mean other countries arent great places to live in either. The netherlands are pretty decent too.
I had you marked as one of those "the united states is #1 and everyone else can suck it or die because they are worthless" types.

This is ridiculous. More booga booga bullshit, now in action. If they want to wiretap criminals the only buildings they have to have backdoors to is White House, Pentagon, Congress, and all other government facilities. Those are the real criminals.
Terrorist? Bullshit, the last terror attack was Timothy Mcveigh, everything else is staged bullshit to scare Y00 into submission and into giving up your privacy to get the big bad terrorist. Soon enough the RIAA will use the same protocol laid down by the FCC to catch "pirates" and it wont look pretty. Dont know if anyone thought of this, but if their making a backdoor for Police/FBI, what makes you think someone wont exploit or find a hole in that backdoor, and spread a Super Worm to Fux0r all y00r comps?

the answer becomes obvious, doesn't it? make less money.
as opposed to what? the US? maybe our taxes are only 22%, but another 20% goes to pay for health insurance and uncovered health expenses. where is the advantage there, other than to the insurance, drug, and health care companies? i'm making less than 30000 a year, yet with health care factored in, i never see 40% of my check. and i have decent insurance. my wife used to work at a place where her insurance costs ate up 60% of her check. and the insurance had a 3000 dollar deductible and covered nothing
market whores like you need to shut the fuck up and try to support a family with a real job before you talk about how great america is

This is gonna sound kinda simplistic, but get a job in healthcare, Im a RN and only pay 10 a month for full cadillac style covergae, prescriptions only 7 bones......but more realistically, to solve health care costs we have to get the FTC to once again restrict drug company advertising like we did up until 1996 (ever wonder why costs all of a sudden shot up one daY? Thats when it started) , as right now the drug companies claim high prices are necessary for R&D costs, but what they dont tell you is that they spend MORE money on advertising (TV mainly) than they do on R&D.........thats the solution, No advertising, no more high prices. Universal healthcare isnt the answer, ever wonder why everyone from around the world comes here for medical care?
As for helping a family with a real job, maybe our government shouldnt be building a bridge in Alaska to a remote island of 55 inhabitants at a cost of 395 million (thats right), or spending $83 million dollares each for a F-22 raptor, why not give you cash based on income, not povertly level BS, but middle class blue collar guys who just a need a fair shake, and give you the cash to buy insurance each moth for you and your family, you and the govt would be better of because that way theres no burreaucratic BS and it saves money in the long run by not having to fix you in the ER where it costs everyone a gripload of cash
..........somebody once said that the real threat of capitalism is capitalism itself, as left unchecked society becomes valued in terms of profits and losses rather than rights and wrongs...........
Its sad if it werent true, but that used to be the shit that reagan republicans used to advocate but Bush and his "crack" team of "advisors" have utterly fucked it all up, instead of cutting BS programs like I said above they actually are the ones most often proposing that shit in the first place, :icon_thum that and they wont legalze pot, so Im reminded why Im a libertarian.

It may not be, but the service my family has been recieving has been top notch. When I was a baby, we did not have medicare, and I was very sick. The bills almost bankrupted my family. Things are much better now. I didnt believe my dad when he told me, but mom saved the bills, and showed them to me.

For some things our waiting lists are long, but we have to remember that if not for our medicare many would not be able to afford the care they are now recieving, and although our taxes are high, our country is not spending money it doesnt have, and is actually paying down the debt. If you ran a company by always borrowing money to kep it afloat it would soon be bankrupt. A household, company, or country needs to be self substaining.

Fleecy many of the problems are from the provinces not wanting to be acountable to the feds for how money is spent. They need to be accountable so we know where the money is going. Im lucky as we have 2 great family Drs. The main ones secretary is his wife, and also a RN, that used to run a department at the hospital in bridgewater ( a large town in our area) and she is a great help. She does all of the flue shots for him, and IMHO a good nurse is almost as good as a GP.

Yah, but your missing the point of what Im saying, the drug companies say that they charge such high prices beacuse of the high costs of reasearch and develpment, but what they dont tell you is that they spend almost twice as much on ADVERTISING, so simply put make it illegal again for them to advertise by way of the FTC and drug prices will ahve to come down as they lose the crux of their argument. You can track the direwct coorelation of high prices to the lifting of the moratorium by the FTC in 1996.

Try childrens aspirin, in small daily dosed, consult your MD first, but it should work well also. Low Na (cardiac) diet is a good start, that and regular exercise and you'll do nicely, as for your parents sorry to hear their sick, I've worked with many geriatrics over the years, and its tough work, congrats your fighting the good fight though, as all too often they get tossed in Nursing Homes by shortsighted or negligent family mebers only to wonder why their family members are slowly becoming sicker and sicker. The stimulation and attention that can only be given by close friends and family is the best medication for them. Keep up the good work my friend.

i say we weld together 10,000 used oil drums (cleaned of course) and make a floating island country, as as every person joins they have to weld on 100 more barrels to be initiated.
weld a few poles up for shade and hammocks to sleep in.
must have all vacinations, be std tested, and women must have a 6 month depro shot, BEFORE boarding the island.
that way all we do all day is make acoustic music, fish, and fuck.
goverment and task asignment would be handled military style via seniority. no dictoator. originators of island would be the senate with no person on it stronger than other. vote onings like, when and who goes to get more rice.

But why are the same drugs sold for less in other countries? Even worse, a lot of health providers make it where people can not buy generic drugs. They will not allow it because they favor one company over another or they just want to keep the name brand value high after the patent runs out. Its all politics and bank accounts.
The drug companies get huge tax breaks for research but they never come up with a cure for anything. The only thing we get is new names to replace the older ones we already know and at a higher cost with a ton of side effects. Years prior the FDA would not have allowed many of these drugs to market but they are only looking at the profit line. Some of the patents ran out on their big money makers so they release a steady stream of shit that could kill but make you feel better. How long can they keep a person sick but alive is whats its about. The big secret is that many of the new drugs they charge so much for are only varients of older drugs. Its a freakin crime
The only break throughs that happen these days are from universities or small biotech companies.

Which is fucked up because they are taxpayer funded yet does the taxpayer get get a break? No. we pay for the research but dont get the benefits. the reason why they're cheaper everywhere else is because they have price controls, thats a slippery slope that i dont think were ready for. I do agree though, being someone in the industry, somerthing has to be done, but I think I would like to include a discussion about the proverbial "social conrtract" to address the larger issues of our government and our relationship with it. I joined the Navy at seventeen went to the gulf, came back at 19 and couldnt buy a fuckin beer? Risked my life, yet wasnt deemed mature enoiugh by default to drink a fuckin beer. Our govt does a lot of fucked up shit, and having been to cool ass places like Amsterdam it often sickens me how out of touch our govt can be somtimes. i mean come on, jail time for pot users? Id rather people smoke pot than drink. Our govt becomes increasingly discconected from joe america, all the while both sides of the political spectrum dont give a fuck, even so called states rights conservative Republicans (Terry Schiavo? Medical marijuana?) Man, gettin a headache. State of politics and american society makes my blood pressure go up.
