Shaw cable has, this year, begun to roll out traffic-shaping technology on their network using technology from Ellacoya. It seems they started using this service in early 2005 in the greater Vancouver area, probably because Shaw's network is most overloaded in that market. There have been reports that they are rolling it out to Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. Ellacoya's technology works by "deep packet inspection" which is a type of firewall that's super-intelligent. That is, it doesn't just know about IP and TCP or UDP ports, it can also look inside the packet and see if it's FTP, HTTP, Bittorrent, kazaa, and etc. Therefore, it's not affcted by port numbers. This technology, while impressive, is not perfect. It can mis-identify packets, and requires constant upgrades to keep track of all potential types of data traversing the internet, of which there are many, and the possibility to create a new one today exists.

This is of some concern to me. I have been looking for a good reason to switch ISP's. I have not noticed decreased upload speeds though, but shaw does have a reputation for bitching about bandwidth.

all they would see on mine is winrar packets.. compressed files.. all sorts, music are hashes and sent out in pieces. I doubt they could get really good info on anything.

Holy shit, if you look at dsl reports they had a long running thread about shaw doing bandwidth throttling but of course Shaw denied it until they were blue in the face at the time.

I live in Burnaby and I noticed in the summer my BT speeds were becoming ass too....maybe a move to Telus DSL is in the cards...

Shaw customers, want to increase your upload speed? Just open a lot of slots. It may not be very conservative, but hey, it helps you keep a ratio. I personllly only have 12 or so slots per torrent. I idol on torrents so it's not that hard.

*shakes head* pay attention I said I lived in Burnaby, My speeds were fine until the summer.
I did not have a decrease in speeds last November - December when they implemented the first stage in South Van.

My speeds only became shit this past Summer.
I bloody well know enough to tell when my speeds are crap and when abouts it happened..
I didn't think I was affected because I have an older model motorola modem but now that they openly admit it I know.

Also opening slots or ports is a waste of time, its nothing to do with that crap.
It's a packet shaper.

An easy way around it is to keep using the old Terayon modems. The Ellacoya firewall has only been implemented on the Docsis (Motorola) nodes, and the only downside to Terayon is you can't get Extreme-I.

The EASIEST way to tell these fuckers off....is to DROP your account! They won't listen to anything else and if enough people do it....mabye they would change. If not, tell them to go to hell and get another provider.

There is a fix that is out on one my websites i go to. The torrent file is renamed.. for example.. .movie
and you choose to open that type of file associated with BT CLIENT and then it starts downloading like normal.
