According to this article research firm Fulcrum Global Partners is predicting that 10 million iPods will be sold this holiday season and another research firm, Piper Jaffray, says that one third of them will be sold to consumers either replacing an older iPod or buying a second or third one. Piper also says that there is a growing market for used iPods, one that may eclipse the single digit sales of new players by iPod competitors. According to NPD Group, last September Sandisk was second in DAP sales with 4.7% of the market, HP third with 2.8%, iRiver with 2.6% and Creative with 2.3%. If my iPod went under, I would definetely consider buying another one. I would do some research first though.

I think it rediculous how apple is the only company that can figure out how to make an mp3 player that isn't just a piece of crap and because of that they charge twice as much as necessary. At least its an American company, but still, you'd think that Sony, Panasonic or someone could have figured out how to make one by now, they've been out and selling like hotcakes for years now.
