well one has heard that there are many dvd quality movies on edonkey (the 700.000+ kategory eh)..so, if a kazaa user like me would like to get to the honey jar, how do I go about it and do I? Is there spyware, if so where do I get the clean client, is there any sites or info I should know? All help and comments are appreciated! Im on adsl btw..

edonkey is great.
I have managed to download over 40 gigs of high quality music and assorted files in a few months off of edonkey.
Go here to view possible downloads.
http://sharereactor.com
http://filenexus.com
http://musicdoneky.com
and edonkey's search engine http://jigle.com
their is a spyware free version of edonkey at edonkey's website. The developers are quite cool about that.
also a new application has hit the scene in the last few months.
emule, it is a open source client for the edonkey network. I wasn't particularly impressed with it, but it was still in alpha when I tried it. It may be better now.
check out the corresponding website on edonkey and emule for more info.
If you need help just ask.
Peace!

Well it depends! I have been an eDonkey user for a long time, and this program has it's pros and cons.
It's absolutely true that the content on the network is absolutely incredible! www.sharereactor.com releases lots of software, games, dvds, tv show episodes, porn, etc. through the donkey so take a look there to see if you are as overwhelmed as I was in the beginning.
One big feature of eDonkey is the absence of leechers. This is not meant to sound insulting, but this is probably not a good thing for the large majority of Kazaa-users... every download is divided into segments. This means that as soon as you download something, other people who are also downloading the same file will download from your completed segments of the file as well. This insures that everyone shares on the community, which is probably why eDonkey is considered to be the best P2P network by many.
The above feature means that for a typical 700 MB movie you shouldn't be surprised to 'lose' 1200 MB or so due to simultaneous uploads to other users.
The influx of users has meant recently that the download speeds have come to a grinding halt, as servers are overused (the network uses small servers, not controlled by the maker). This seems to be better now, as I have just recently downloaded "No one lives forever 2" on my 512/128 cablemodem and it was done in a matter of hours with 55 kb/s (max is 65 kb/s in my case).
A lot of novice computer users complain about incredibly low downloadspeeds or no downloading at all, mostly due to their firewall or something being set wrongly.
You need a bit of computer experience for maximum experience of the donkey... that experience can be overwhelming though once you are all set, trust me! :-)
eDonkey2000 is spyware free, get it at www.edonkey2000.com.
There's also a new serverless edonkey-compatible network at www.overnet.com, but I haven't tested it personally.
See for yourself! If you're not a leecher and have a bit of computer experience, you will love this I think.

sorry i h8 edonkey, it never utilizes my bandwith, (100K avg.) i may as well be on a 56k when i'm on edonkey, as for content yeah lots of it, and accessible to, if you don't mind waiting 3 weeks and leaving edonkey running 24hrs a day

hes right about the hard drives, i filled a 40 gig hard drive in slightly over a month on edonkey and im not the most veracious downloader ever.
theres loads of faults you can pick with edonkey (and overnet)they are slow, have connection difficulties, a smaller userbase than other apps, the interface is utilitarian at best, the search function sucks big time etc etc
but when it comes to downloading high quality games/appz and dvd rips no other p2p network can even come close.
good luck with it, i know your gonna like it.

MorningSon, do you have a low ID? (click the question mark in your donkey, it should be well over a million). If that is the case, that would explain your low download speeds.
I take it however that you tried that, perhaps there's something else wrong? Are you downloading something rare?
As I said I recently downloaded "No One Lives Forever 2", the full 2 cds in only a matter of hours at max. downloadspeed and it only had a 3 rating for availability on ShareReactor.
Have you checked out the edonkey2000 forum? They have lots of experienced users, perhaps your connection level is too low or something like that.
100 kb/s should be possible, if you are having 56k speeds then there's a problem...

Hey since you have a good connection (i.e. ADSL) then a program that can multi download is a must. Emule has the ability to swarm just like kazaa but dont expect high speeds. The program is in it's early stages but i have found 0.19c to be quite effective. Check it out at http://emule.sf.net. or http://emule-project.net.

well Ive tried it out now and I must say, it had some need searchresults but 50% of those stays on red in the bar and hasnt changed though Ive reconnected a thou times to find it, and thoose that are blue or mainly blue are also just "looking" all the time..hmm...Maybe I should try Emule as some suggests, thanks for the link Tekker...I must say the server system confuses me a tad, as there are no specifications to the servers, theyre all just like dsl Deutchland you know? And I cant connect to any of them anyhow..lol..BUT I WANT THOSE KUNG FU MOVIES!! WHAAAAA!!!

i started out on morpheus when it was on the fastrack network then kazaa wanted better quality files so switched over to the donkey was fairly happy with the files but not the speed sure my connection would max now and then but was not consistent so i went ove to IRC has files of better quality than the donkey or has them before the donkey and the speeds are much faster cab max out my 512k connection no problem i would advise anyone to investigate IRC and NEWSGROUPS if you want quality and speed

edoneky is not for everyone.
It is amusing when I here people trash it. I think it's cool as the edonkey community is by far the mellowist and tightest in p2p.
If it does not grow much more it is for the best. In fact it seems to run better when it doesn't grow to fast.
I get what I want and more and it really is like surfing at times. It takes some technique but also just using it for awhile it will become better and better.
you need hints?
well update your server met before each login.
also set it so it does not try to autoconnect at startup, you then right click on the biggest servers and try to login to the larger ones as it will give you a jump start and getting sources for your files.
after you are connected to a server be sure to click in options always stay connected.
use a search engine to check how many sources are available for the files you want. If it is less then 6 or so, you got a very long wait. 12 or more it will be better. Of course sources in the 50's etc. if you want it, jump on it.
browse the forums for new releases and it is usually 3 or 4 days after a release when you will find many sources.
edonkey is strange, sources do not last forever. so your search should begin with forums and search engines.
set your your max connections to 1500 if you got dsl and que up at least 30 files if you are impatient. After 2 days you will begin harvesting tons of files. I keep at least 30 on que and complete 5-10 files a night of various sizes.
just played around till I had some success.
if you are impatient, then your out of luck. but heck I just checked my cd's and in 2 months I got way over 60 gigs. I thought it was less, but it is way more.
Peace!

Excellent post Rickio.
A lot of people think they can queue the files they want at wait for them to start, that is however hardly ever the case. Just leave the computer on and it will start.... I love leaving the thing on over night and come back the next morning to see my files 'completed'.
People who trash edonkey and prefer Kazaa are either not looking for full software/game iso's, newest releases or the biggest collection of divx. eDonkey sucks for music, but there's absolutely nothing you can't get otherwise through the donkey.
An additional tip for people who can't get onto a good server: as Rickio stated, you need a new server.met, get it at www.thedonkeynetwork.com from our good donkey friend ocbmaurice. Just look at all those servers... you want to get on the biggest ones, but please take a close look at the column which states the number of logged on users. If it's a round number, say 3000 or so... you might as well not bother getting on there, cos it's full!!! Look for a big server with a numer of users like 2367. Big chance you can get on it, and off you go. Dozens and dozens and dozens of connection per file, if you have set the maxconnections right.
Good luck.

That's because you use eDonkey like kaazaa or WinMX. It's not about search results, the real cream of the donkey network is www.sharereactor.com. No red bars on those babies!
And as far as clients, ther is now no reason whatsoever why anyone should keep using the bug-ridden original client when a very advanced eMule is out. eMule 0.21a3 is, quite simply, amazing. It made me change back from OverNet after 4 months of exclusive ON use.
check it out at www.emule-project.net.

lets just say of your gonna get eDonkey2000 you better share a whole lot of gigabytes I'm not talking 4 or 5 I'm talking like 20 or more, because I shared like 9 gigs and I tried to connect I couldn't connect to one server thing, it would always be on hold, then go to the next one, I hated it
