What are your preferences? Personally I find ADSL faster for downloading torrent stuff when compared to the same speed cable line; dunno why.

Depends.

I prefer FIOS, but it wont be in my neighborhood until fall '06. :-\

Right now I get 10mbit/1mbit cable though. so I'm good with that for the time being.
(But 15/2 for the same price I pay right now for 10/1... I cant wait.)

But all other things equal, I like DSL better than Cable.

When one considers that the cable provider in my area is Comcast, DSL wins hands down!!

I have 3meg cable, no complaints here. Always max the connection on private torrents.

I hate to plug the man, but... if it's available at your location, it's better then both DSL and/or cable.
(Unless you can find a 30mb/s cable connection).

Other intereresting quotes...

Verizon DSL $15/month (aprox)
Earthlink DSL with Static IP $55/month (aprox)
Verizon Wireless Broadband $60/month w/1 or 2 year contract - forget which(aprox)

Everywhere else... Cable and/or satelite is what you might have to go with.

Other things to take into consideration... price of the phone line.
Price of digital phone can offset the internet connection cost if you go with cable depening on where you are.

However, IMHO, a standard analog (non digital) phone line has much better sound quality & service.

Also to be considered in some areas... Internet over Power Line. Not available in many areas but does exist.

And as for dialup, it should be a last resort type of thing. I've seen it available for free via freenets.

In the future... (In the year 3000) Internet over gas line and internet via water pipe.
I think eventually homes will be reduced to 3 connections. Water, Sewage, and power/internet.
Internet should be a utility.

Oh, I forgot... internet via sewage hookup. If one gets internet via gas line or sewage pipe and the network crashes is there an explosion risk?

I have 6 Mbits ADSL. I think that with Cabel you have to share the speed with all people using the cabel Net in your area. i get always the full 6 Mbits (If the sevrer can hadel it).
My Vote goes for ADSL
And soos for ADSL2+ (24 Mbits!!!)

Same here...and I don't have to share bandwidth. SBC wins hands down in my area although Comcast would have you believe otherwise.
