uhhh . . . magic dust?

WHY in THE hell would I just tell you to use a router, if there was another viable way?

You COULD set up Internet Connection Sharing by installing additional Network cards, and running cables everywhere, but thats the most cracked up way I can think of.

If you don't have a cd burner, you could always transfer small files on floppies. It's outdated technolegy since the thumbdrive was concieved, and it's far from versatile, but it still does the job for small files. If you're stupid you could buy an external hardrive, but a wireless router and adapter would get unrivaled results in all aspects. Thankyou.

Welcome to ZP, it's always good to have a new member. That is, unless they're out to cause trouble. Thankyou.

The usb thumdrive is better than the floppy. Unless you're a cheap bastard, stick with floppies. They are only good for 1.49 megabytes maximum storage. I'll say no more.

If you can afford attending university, you can afford a router.

If you can afford attending university, you can afford a router.

If you can split the rent with multiple people with multiple PCs, you can afford a router

Ok, thanx for the replies, the reason i asked is it possible to do it without the router is because since all of us are hooked on to the universitiy's network, i thought it might be possible to exchange files or create a server of sharefiles without a router. Thanx for letting me know and thanx for the welcome WhiteCrow

You can do this.

Usually universities subnet out the LANs by some grouping: floor, cube, building, etc. You should be able to see most people in your group through "My Network Places" and the appropriate workgroup. You could also directly connect by IP.

You have to enable filesharing and make sure others are able to access your computer, of course.

You could create an ftp server, alternatively you cant set up your share folder so that only specific users on the domain can access the share. (Assuming you have admin rights.)

Hello chum!

We found ourselves in a similar situation to yourself (ie the class of students i'm in).
The solution?.........we created a forum at a free forum provider (eg forumsplace etc) and posted files, hyperlinks etc, for each other to use.
Accessible from anywhere you like!

And this has sufficed so far.

Good luck.

maybe a wireless ad-hoc network if you have wireless on the computers in question...

or maybe using something like waste...

I really like the use of forums idea above though...

if you REALLY want to do it through the university network you could set up a VPN, don't ask me how i never set one up but you can do wonky shit like that

if everyone can afford a second ethernet card you can set up a router and private non-routable LAN using 192.168.*.* IP addresses

would be a PITA to set up but would be a bit safer than sharing directly over the campus network without dumping everyone's ionternet connection onto the same pipe.

also could be set up so people who want to connect to the internet with only one card go through the router for everything while those who want to use their own internet conneciton buy a second network card and use the LAN only for internal sharing.

almost anything you can think of CAN be done with networking

though most things probably SHOULD NOT be done

There is a program that may be viable til you get a router.
