Are you saying you have a psp and you want to buy the new apple, if thats the casse you must be loaded. If your just asking for advice on which to buy there are other options you know. Some that are geared for your own media.

H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
Thats apples video support so its not all that extensive they play only apple format from what I can tell. If you really wanna have a portable media player look at the other options. Iriver runs on windowsmedia software and only runs windows fromat from what I can deduce on the site. Creative supports most popular video formats and seems like a great system. Its more expensive then the ipod but would probably work alot better. Check reviews before buying anything tho as the best advice are from previous buyers.

MPEG-4 is a pretty general codec. A lot of cell phones that can record video use that codec. You should be able to make movies and throw them on your iPod with ease. I dont know what u use to rip, but Quicktime should convert your AVI to and mp4 file.
