I hate the things.

And so now I'm on the search for some relatively inexpensive portable headphones that don't make my music sound like tinny shit.

Any input? What I should lean towards, stay away from, etc?

What is relatively inexpensive to you? Give me a price range and I shall see what I can find.

Free would be nice.

Let's say... less than $30 (US dollars)

(poor jobless college student ya know)

edit:
Okay, I thought I should point out a few I've read some reviews on.
-Sennheiser PX200 (they're over $30, but I'd still spring for 'em)
Amazon review (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000089GN4/qid=1128806984/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_unbuck_1/102-2601436-5561717?v=glance&s=electronics&n=541966)

-Sony MDR-Q22LP
Another Amazon review (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008VIX2/102-2601436-5561717?v=glance)

From my personal experience with only two sets of Sennheisers, I'm a fan. :) The Sony pair is cheaper, but I'm not sure how comfortable I'd think they are.

I got senheisers with my iriver h10, fantastic audio quality, much better than the earphones with the ipod.

These are the Sennheisers I have... http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=004974

I can't really walk around campus wearing those. They're not very portable...

They have some wireless protable headphones for the ipod I think logitech makes em. Probably out of your price range tho but probably convinitent as hell.

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/CA/EN,CRID=2439,CONTENTID=10540&ad=AMR_wipod

Correction waaaaaay out of your price range. You could pretty much buy a new ipod for the cost. Other then those I duno ask everyone else.

Wireless? Don't think I need wireless...

Now I'm debating between the senn px100 or px200.

PX100 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826106333)
PX200 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826159416)

silentscream

okies it seems the 200s have noise cancelling

which is nice

and the frequency response is good on both

id say the extra $10 would be well spent

make sure u post a pic of them on u :)

I agree, i have some wireless ones and they sound great. I would get the wired one's though cause i occasionally get interference.

Did you click the '20 new and used' there? I see a brand new set from elecdeals, for 38.88 plus 4.99 shipping.

Well spud... I have the PX100s, and they are great. They do not cancel out outside noise though. The PX200s are closed, so they would have less outside noise (but, supposedly, poorer sound quality). If you are going to be going to loud areas, the 200s would probably be better, or the 250s, which have active noise cancelling.

I used to ride the bus with the 100s and the sounds from other people and the vehicle were irritating, but moderate noise levels are fine (like ambient noise). You can always turn things up... The 100s are noisy outside too... the sound goes outward due to the open design.

I would probably buy the 200s if you are irritated by other people's noise. I would have bought them for riding the bus, but the 100s are fantastic when it is normalish sound levels and have the most favorable reviews other than the KOSS porta-pros, which are also supposed to be awesome. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001P4ZH/ref=sr_11_1/103-1249889-3991063?%5Fencoding=UTF8
Honestly, the portapro is supposed to have awesome sound, but they are damned ugly (and open as well).

you could always consider Koss the plug

What I'd use them for is bus rides, walking around campus, sitting at the library, plane trips (if and when I ever get anywhere), so I think the closed ones would be the best.

And holy cow I cannot afford headphones that cost $499.

Tater, you can try these good sony's.
They fit in your ear canal and give you good sound

not too far beyond the price you listed.

They come with 3 or 4 different sized plugs so you can find one that fits your ear perfect.

Those are starting to grow on me the more I read about them. Now the goal is to find the best price from a trustworthy place... does anyone know the site that reviews other sites and their reputations? I used to know it.

you can go to your local wallyworld :D and find some decent headphones for about $20, or that's where I got mine and they still work pretty well for as much use as I have got out of them

I'm spending way too much time debating with myself about relatively cheap headphones...

Anyways, I am now looking at Sennheiser MX500's.... however, some reviews are saying that the buds themselves are kind of big, and that would suck for me because my ears are little and I'd rather not drop $20 on earbuds that are just going to either fall out or make my ears hurt. I could keep using my crappy ipod earbuds if I wanted that. Another thing I kept reading was that the cord is too short.... one person did note, however, that he was over 6 feet tall and maybe for shorter people, the cord length wouldn't be an issue. I'm short. It could work...

The Sony pair look neat, especially with the different sized dealies to put on them in case one size doesn't work out. I like that idea. It often came up in reviews that the right bud died after a few months or so. That sucks. Especially for $40 headphones. Sucks a lot.

I think earbuds are easier for me to carry around campus, as they don't take up much space in my already stuffed backpack.

OHHH but winter is coming isn't it? That means I'll be wearing my winter coat (not til the temp drops below 15F though... that's my general rule, unless it's snowing or something)... I guess I really don't want bulky headphones sticking out of those pockets either when not in use. Actually, in the coat I have now, if I put ANYTHING in my pockets, it creates a huge bulge that just looks absolutely freaking terrible.

*sigh*
