is anybody operating old-style host caches any more, or is everyone now using Gnet Web Host Caching? Secondly, does anyone have portable code to crawl gnet web host caches and scrape/connect from the sites?

Alot of the old host caches are still online. Reflectors are not being used, Ultrapeers replaced them and is the standard.
If you want to run a host cache all you have to do is to run bearshare in "Anchor" mode by turnint it on in the ini file. All the remaining host caches are doing this. Else you could run the gwebcache script.

Could someone explain what a Gnet Web Host is? I'll bet it has something to do with search results.. but then again I could be way off.

Its a distributed host caches which are used to get people connected to gntuella. It doesnt affect searches or transfers all they do is send 10 active hosts for people to connect to. There are traditional central host caches which all use bearshare in anchor mode and then there is gnuwebc which is a web script that people run on web servers which they all work in a p2p manner to act as a host cache.
