from what I can gather, you can't convert say, an mp3 to a midi and have the vocals or whatever.

yes you can convert them, try a program called ring factory (think that is the name), anyways there are quite a few ringtone converters that work for that

a poly is a midi file.
midi is just digital tones
it cant really include vocals

Really now . . and you have lots of midis of Celine Dion do you?
rubbish
if you want to have the clarity and vocals, you have to convert to MP3 etc
Is there a particular reason you want MIDI? *shudder*
Be sure you know what your cell is capable of, then use P2P and search for programs, ringtones etc.
And ALWAYS . . . ALWAYS scan these files for virus before opening them.

I use verizon and i checked the true tones I downloaded and they are under a midi format. And it will not give me the option to apply my mp3's as a ringtone.

Must have been a free fone . . . .
Then Midi you are stuck with.
Use P2P and search Ringtones, you will find 10s of thousands, 90% of them suck
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mp3+to+midi+converter
good luck.

A lot of these tones are to the point of being obnoxious. Some of the ones I hear at the store when Im trying to make some custom arrows make me want to shove their phone up their ass. My phone simply rings, followed by me saying whaddafuckdoyouwant.

Obnoxious is too soft a word, especially considering the ringtones there selling on tv eg. crazy frog!

Mine is the Super Mario Brothers theme.
Who needs songs when you've got kickass theme tunes like that?

I make all mine for my phone in mp3pro 80Kbps, they sound crystal clear. The difference is I put good music on, not shitty pop songs. I have queen - another one bites the dust for my message, just the deadly intro. New foo fighters in my tone.

I agree. They are very annoying at times. I just got a new phone and I just want a simple ring ring with a little vibration.

LOL, same here at least for now. Old video game ringtones sound awesome on phones, and are the best options also when it comes to midi ringtone only phones.
I have either the Konami, or Capcom sound for my text message notification.
And usually a ring tone from Mario, contra, or Final Fantasy, etc.
Im a nerd...i know.
