i have an old pentium 2 400mhz i just installed 512mb ram which i bought of of internet.
but in my system it is only showing as 256mb plz can some one tell me wht is wrong?
either i have been ripped off or thr is something tht iam not doing right! :icon_shak

erm maybe your mobo only supports 256mb and nothing more
or you got ripped off

Back to the topic....

Did you get a model number when you purchased the RAM? Does it match what is printed on the RAM? Where did you purchase it?

There's a good chance that the motherboard just doesn't support sticks that large. Being the age it is, I doubt there are any BIOS updates to fix it either.

Other things to look at, what ammount does it show when you're booting your computer (the BIOS screen). You could also try running a memory testing program like Memtest86 to make sure the stick is not horribly bad.

Maybe the motherboard can't support that amount of ram.

i just wana thank crackerjacker, phalkon30 and Vampmon for your help.
i was able to solve the problem. checked with the manuf. website of MB it supports up to 1 gig of RAM but one slot does not support more thn 256MB!!
