Opera is looking to mobilise its existing community of users in order to overtake Firefox as the number two browser on the desktop. Last week, Opera decided to give away an ad-free version of its browser for the first time. Jon von Tetzchner, chief exec of Opera Software, said that by removing the inclusion of banner ads from the free version of its browser the company had removed the biggest reason users might have for avoiding its software.

Dam that reminds me I have to give Opera a go. I have it, but keep getting sidetracked.

I think they'll have a ways to go to overtake Firefox, especially since there was pent-up demand for something new that Firefox already satisfied. Still, the more the merrier. Nothing like multiplying IE's woes.

I use Firefox on the main computers, but for my laptop I installed Opera. It's nearly the same (minus the great extensions) so I don't notice too many differences.
Opera being free is good, but IE comes with Windows and that's all some people know. They aren't the people who are going to switch to something as different as Opera or Firefox, they'll sit there using IE out of tradition (or blissful ignorance).

I don't like Opera very much. I use Firefox for the tabs, but i'd rather be using IE.

I downloaded the free Opera and tried it. There was something about it... ohyea, I wanted to move a toolbar, but it wouldn't let me move it the way I wanted to. I stuck the address bar at the bottom and actually liked it better than on the top, but I want the tabs bar to show up somewhere that's not next to the bookmarks bar. The rest of it, the functionality, that'd just be stuff I'd have to get used to... and that requires time and actual usage.
