WinMX Setup With The Patch For N00bs

A. After choosing a folder to install WinMX to and after agreeing to the terms and conditions, the next five steps are fairly self explanatory.

B. When it asks for your connection type, be sure to make it right. If you happen to be on a T1 and choose 56k (not likely, but ok) WinMX will be likely to have problems.

C. WinMX will automatically test its ability to make an outgoing connection. As an advanced WinMX user, I would recommend that you click the ‘Cancel Test/Manually Configure’ Button and then, if you need to connect through a server (Proxy/Socks4/Socks5) be sure to give your server’s i.p., login name and password. If you have to use your local operating system, DNS server or Socks5 protocols, be sure to also specify these on this step. (Canceling the test and manually configuring can shorten your time spent in frustration, but if you dont know what you are doing, visit Vladd44.com or the Zeropaid.com BBS for more info.)

D. After specifying your Proxy server settings, click next. now in the next step it asks if your computer is able to recieve incomming TCP Connections from the internet. If you can, you may now specify the incomming port with which WinMX will accept incomming connections. (Opening ports can speed up incomming and outgoing bandwidth for WinMX, but BE CAREFUL when setting this up, as opening ports may leave your computer vulnerable if you do not have a decent firewall like Zone Alarm. Always be sure your virus protection and Firewall are updated.) You may need to configure your Router for these port settings.

E. After specifying your Incomming TCP Connections, it will now ask you if your computer can Send and Recieve UDP Packets over the internet. Follow the steps outlined in step D, making sure that these port settings are configures through your router as well.

F. In the next step, it will ask for your colour preferance. If you need me to explain this....whatever. Just choose black background....everyone does. Its 'Cool' I guess.

G. Now it will show the 'Tips For New Users' dialogue box. Read it if you want, or dont, then click next.

H. Now WinMX will open. You are not yet ready to make it work, but while we are here, lets set it up the rest of the way. at the top of the WinMX window, on the left hand side is a button named 'Settings'. Click it. This is where you can configure WinMX on the fly. We will only go over the 'WinMX Peer Network' tab, the 'OpenNap Networks' tab, and the 'Bandwidth throttle tab as the rest will be up to you.

I. Click the 'WinMX Peer Network' tab. If you have a high speed connection to the internet, allocating more bandwidth for WinMX can make searching for downloads faster and easier. Allocating too much bandwidth on slow speed, or unsatble connections may result in lack of results in the search window. Adjust this setting accordingly. If you are not sure, stop by here on zeropaid and ask, or if you need an answer sooner, get on WinMX and enter a WinMX help channel in the 'Chat' window. The list of channels will have to accumulate before you will see all the channels, so please be patient.

J. Click the 'OpenNap Networks' tab. If you intend to use OpenNap, you cannot use ASCII (or symbols and symbolic letters) in your name, most of the OpenNap servers will not let you login if you do. Specify a new name here. To use OpenNap, you will need a servers list. To get one, Click the 'Networks' button and then, towards the top of the 'Networks' screen, click 'OpenNap Protocol Networks' button and then click the 'Find .wsx' button. When you get a few results, download them and then open them in the 'OpenNap Protocol Networks' screen by clicking the 'Import .wsx' button. then highlight the network(s) you want to connect to and click 'Connect'. Thats that! Remember to keep your .wsx files updated.

K. Click the 'Bandwidth Throttle' tab in the settings box. Here you can allocate bandwidth for downloads. Be sure to only allocate no more than 80% of your total bandwidth or you may have trouble with other internet-enabled applications. Allocating (or limiting) your bandwidth also allows for 'Bandwidth Priority' on downloads and uploads.

L. Thats it for setting up WinMX. now you need the patch. go to http://www.MXPie.com/ and download the patch. There is only one way to patch WinMX now. And it comes in the form of an auto-updater. No instructions need be posted here. Simply follow the instructions found on the site.

NOTES::>
For 56k and other slower connections, Try this: make sure your 'auto-find sources' is set to the lowest possible number and that 'auto-enter queue' is set to the highest. (sometimes you get lucky and get queued early. i do all the time, even on 56k and 33.6k). after this, make sure your bandwitth is allocated to the correct amount and that you are not using any other bandwidth-eating proggies like internet explorer or virus updates. (if your virus updates are out of date, i would reccomend updating them FIRST, but thats on you.)
as far as searches go, make sure that the bandwitth that is allocated for winmx (not the downloading Bandwidth setting found in the Bandwidth throttle window) is set for the medium to high level. (this may sound stupid, but for the purposes of earching, it comes in handy.) when you are finished searching, set it back to whatever works best for your connection speed and then make sure you are searching for alternates from the 'transfers' window. continue to do this until you have enough sources. if they time out or cancel for any reason more than twice, clear them. keep retrying the sources and finding sources on the slowest downloads.

Everyone plays favourites at ZP. The channels in WinMX are similar to the hubs in the dinosaur known as Direct Connect, but since DC is a fave here no one tells IT to die. Even now many hubs don't allow multi-source download clients.

If there is a movie or game or album from someone i really like to something, i will buy it. i usually only download to archive the things i cannot find. i usually back up my cds as well, but i never share what i make.

I'm a bit worried about events unfolding in the winmx scene. I for one do not trust much in the P2P realm and its hard for me to trust any new server set up to connect winmx. Seems like something the RIAA would have already thought of. For now, I'm just gonna let it die and ride open nap when I need a fix.

I am a bit sceptical on weather or not a new server even exists, let alone if it was not some thing set up by the riaa to track down the other servers. but then they wouild have already done that. It seems to me that WinMX may be on its last leg. all that the riaa has to do is shut down the last servers and they will have it by the balls so to speak. it really sux because WinMX was an excellent app for just about any type of media. I am online now and seeing some somewhat better speed than before. Most of the chat room have returned and may of the users are sharing again. I think they should klay low and not share for a while, but then if the riaa has their gaze set on the app, then it wont matter much.

One can always hope.

Whenmx is working really well for me too. Some files I have had in que for awhile have finished up now with ease. I guess now that the fakes are gone or are being blocked, it makes the whole network work much better. Also I think the network is much less fragmented, thats a very good thing. Most people running primary now has done wonders! The new patch that came out the other day works very well as it connects much faster.

Ok I used the patch from the winmxworld site yesterday and it was working great. Then today, I put my WinMX this morning and it was working fine. Then after a few hours, I decided to open it up again and it's not connecting anymore. Is there an error with the patch now?

Hello, I thought I would bring this topic current and see if there is any updated info regarding WinMX. I am no guru, just a faithfull WinMX fan. Long story short, I need to re-download WinMX and the respective patches, etc. Is it still usable? I noticed when I searched for download sources, the options arent as straight forward as they used to be either. Any reccomendations for starting from scratch? Please dont tell me that my favorite program is completely dead. Any help is greatly appreciated. :icon_sant

I didnt realize how many asshats were out there now trying to capitalize on selling you WinMX! This is why I was having succh a problem finding a legit download site....

Well, some bad news, but it wont last: I am going to be offline for a long time, but fortunateley I will be able to get back to the swing after i am done with these classes for the "Problems" i have. There is only one thing i would like to say about these so called 'classes' - FUCK THE FEDS. Hi. As my nic indicates, I'm an old WinMx lover. Ironically, it was through WinMx's Open Nap servers that I connected with someone from Malaysia who got me an invite to a DC++ blues hub not long before WInMx went down. My shares went from around 5GB to 200GB in less than 2 months. All clean files and programs; not a single bogus file. But every once in a while, I'd log off DC++ and head over to WinMx to share my windfall. It was always like the start of the Indy500....I'd hit 100 in the queue before I could blink. It was interesting to see what peeps were looking for. Almost invariably, a certain group would always head for the program files. Then it was pretty much wide open after that. I especially enjoyed it when people would go for some of the rarer stuff, because that showed me they really knew what they were looking for, and they'd appreciate it.

Then, obviously, last year, around the fall, I couldn't connect to WinMx any more. I did some searches, and kept seeing stuff like: "WinMx, RIP", so I figured it was gone, like Napster before it. I said my own little private eulogy, and figured that was that. Until today. When I found this site (after having gone through the shock of seeing pay sites for WinMx). :icon_puke

After re-orienting myself, I fired up the 3.31 version I had in my saved files, went through the configurations, and began really reading in earnest what was posted here. It invariably led me to the WinMx World site, http://www.winmxworld.com/ and their "permanent fix" for WinMx. Worked like a charm!! For the first time in a long time, I fired up WinMx, got connected very quickly, could use the primary as well as the secondary connection, was able to search and get results, d/l, and u/l as well. So far, I haven't seen the huge queues, but I imagine it shouldn't be too long before that happens as well.

(NOTE: I have a NetGear RP614 router and found the configuration pages at WinMx World to be perfect for configuring the port forwarding settings. Likewise, I use Sysgate Pro and the instructions for setting that up worked perfectly as well. Also, I've been heeding their strong recommendation to type -c: -user into all the searches.)

Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic, but I am really pleased to be able to get back onto WinMx. It's like seeing an old friend who you'd heard died suddenly appear. (Well, maybe not quite as dramatic as that, but pretty close.)

you should use winmx version 3.54 beta 4 its the most recent and works ecellent for me. i will be putting a new tutorial on how to work the finer points of downloads and other settings and crap. but not for a few weeks. check back or ask someone in another thread. there are sure to be a few experts around.

Downloaded patch,I think it was v 3.31,and had trouble with searches,lots and lots of fakes etc.I'm on a 56k dial up and can't afford to waste what little bandwidth i have on that crap,so now i just use the browse function to que.In settings i have my max d/l from any one source set to just one,this allows me to "bookmark" files and auto que will sort it out later.All my d/ls have been real and have been having no problems except when i tried to enter chat function-no rooms are coming up for me.I don't mind as i usually don't use that function,but i was recently invited into one(blues bunker),I figure its cos I'm old and slow!WinMx is still the best P2P though.

on dial up you are likely to have problems "auto-downloading" because many of the sources will time out regardless of your connection priority and dependability in relation to the one you are downloading from.

i have been working out a few bugs i have found on some of the slower connections speeds and i will have a tutorial on those soon but for now i will just fix the 56k prob. first off and i am sure almost everyone will agree, you need braodband. (dsl, cable, t1, t3, fibre optics[t3+]) but some ppl cant afford it.

You might be able to get away with speeding it up using some commands through MS-DOS or Command Prompt as well (address resolutions and telnet. but then 56k is 56k...), but im not going into that...too complicated.
(maybe ill release a tutorial.....while im at it ill release one on how to light farts too......heh...whatever)

thats about all i have to offer without taking up butloads of text space. no need to read a book for cat's sake.

Thaks for the advice Sorevexed.Funny thing is that the day after i posted we found out that b/band has become available in our area and I've signed up.Now I have to configure a router!!But I'll figure that out.I'd just like to say that the MX community has been very kind with advice and understanding..I mean how much of a file are you going to receive from a 56k sharer,but people have let me d/l and pushed me to the front of their ques on occasion.One more thing..I've put loads of unusual stuff in my list and no-one seems interested,is it just me who uses the system to find stuff I would never usually listen to?
