I have been outside the states because of work and I just got back and I read that winmx was shut down on sep 19. Is this true. Also, I have been looking at all these websites that are asking to pay for winmx, what is that about. Last, I downloaded winmx 3.53 and when I am intstalling it and it tries to connect it asks if I am using sockets. I need assistance with this.

Any P2P program that asks for money is a scam. They are trying to steal your money. Stay far, far away from them. P2Pforums.com has a good guide to scam sites here:

There is a way of getting winMX to work again, but it intails editting the host file. If your the "point&click" type of person, try an alternative. Check out ares

I tried the other way but it gives me a error when it tries to connect during installation. Any idea how I can fix this.
