Encrypt won't work - "The parameter is incorrect"

Anytime I try encrypt a file on my computer I just get the error message.... Note: I am an administrator on the computer, I should be - it's mine!

It happens no matter what, I'm new to using NTFS - I just freshly installed Windows XP Pro with SP2. Any suggestions would be much obliged!

Hi Auggie,

The bottem line is, Explorer.exe is what is accessing these files.

Try turning of the use of the Indexing Service and reboot.

Also, in Explorer, I want you to change your View Attirbutes to LIST and set that as the default view for all folders.

Also, make sure that all the files are NOT set to "Read Only"

Are you using the EFS in XP?


If nothing else, you could try to use "Cipher /e" as a command line, it's pretty straight forward, just dont muck it up.

EFS in XP yeah! I don't see why I need to change the view to list but I've done it anyway.

I don't really want to mess with the cipher command, bad memories in cmd! (whoops)

The files aren't read only, but still no luck.

So anything else up your sleeve?

BTW, I'm using a stripped down version of XP Pro (called stripped to the bone, search Pirate Bay)

All the infomation is on it there. Is it possible that something is missing to let the encryption work?

Auggie you cant strip down a car then complain about it lacking features.

The files shouuld ALL not be read only, set that attribute.

You did not indicate that you followed my directions and changed the behavior of Explorer to LIST. You also did not answer my question.

You should know by now that I try to get people to do things with a purpose, and especially before further mucking up systems with more 3rd party software.

Made a new folder, not read only and tried encrypt it, same thing happens!

I know what encryption is, I have used it with XP loads of times before but on a different comp.

It's getting to the point where I'll have to choose 3rd party but I really don't want to, especially with encryption in mind!

that installation of xp was made with nlite which has the option to remove encryption so im guessing they removed it.

I think ud be best installing something like sparky posted,as once you have removed something from the windows install set up thats not supposed to be removed, its hard to get back.

Firstly, I'd say get yourself a decent copy of windows (an untouched, untampered with version) and customize it yourself with nLite. It's pretty easy, just stick checkmarks next to shit you want gone and it does the rest (pretty much).

If you want to use virtual encrypted drives, TrueCrypt is good, but I'd not even bother with that anymore and skip to full disk encryption at this point. PGP, Compusec are good options (PGP=pay, compusec = free). http://www.ce-infosys.com.sg/CeiNews_FreeCompuSec.asp

Trust me, if your having problems accessing it.. chances are you dont need it to be encrypted =)
