Nintendo has launched its newest handheld gaming device, the GameBoy Micro (http://micro.gameboy.com/), in Japan.

The diminutive device is scheduled to hit retail shelves in the U.S. on September 19 priced at $100.

Tiny and Tough

The Micro, which began shipping on Tuesday, is easily the smallest member of Nintendo's hit GameBoy family. The device is true to its name, measuring just 4 inches long by 2 inches deep and 0.68 inches thick.

The GameBoy Micro is smaller than a deck of cards yet packs gaming power. Nintendo says it has about the same power of previous GameBoy models despite its diminutive size.

It includes a 2-inch color LCD and buttons for both game control and menu selection. Nintendo also markets a variety of face plates to change to look of the device.

Vintage Games Ship

The GameBoy Micro is priced at $109 in Japan, and its launch was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Nintendo's Mario Bros. game.

Launching with the device are three software titles from Nintendo. "Super Mario Bros." and "Dr. Mario and Panel de pon!" both cost $18. The third title, "Mario Tennis Advance," costs $34. GameBoy Advance software can also be played in the device.

Audio and video files can also be played through an adapter.

Ok this is cool I have been shopping around for a gameboy for my son. This sounds like an ideal item for him, and the price isn't to bad compaired to what I have been looking at for what the ones he has been looking at. With the pro packs.

for $30 more, you can get a DS. its worth it. the DS has been getting some really good games on it lately. add in the video adapter cart, and you have little reason to get a PSP

lol, The micro looks like GBA except it doesn't have as much of a curve! IMO there is nothing new here.
