OK, I bought this game knowing my current video card would have problems but I got it anyways as I figured I could just lower the rez and suffer a bit till I got my new card. Boy was I wrong. It shuts down as soon as I try to play it. I've heard of a few people hacking their way into getting older cards to run it but I doubt its worth it. Ive read even the best cards can not run the game with all setting set to high with out getting hit hard in the frame rate catagory. This week I'm gonna go ahead and get me an ATI x850 xt to play this awesome game that they seem to have only made to sell more video cards! I can't wait to blow my wad!

Anyone else have this game and if so, what video card are you running it with?

BF2 needs a serious rig to run well. I'm running it flawlessly at max res with all the goodies turned on, but this is on a P4 3.0GHz with a 6800GT and 2GB of RAM. The memory is very important, with 1GB I experienced a lot of stuttering when textures were loaded, but with 2GB it's smooth as silk.

Was it worth it? Yes :) BF2 is an amazing game if you're into the old Battlefield series.

hmmmz im surprised it crashes my mate got it running on a old celoron 512ram and a gforce 5200 it looked like shit but still played ok..he got a new computer though ater seeing it run on myn im running it on full and i have

6600gt overclocked
3200+64 overclocked
and 1.5gig of ram

does it crash when its loading the menus of straight away?

I have an AMD 64 3000+ but Ive read the CPU is not so important with this game. From the info I got, all the load is on the GPU and the tests with faster CPUs showed very little difference. It did say that 1 gig of ram was plenty but with the textures turned all the way up thel frame rate takes a hit, like you say. I have only one gig of DDR 3200 ram so the texture will be set to medium. But the bench mark tests I saw showed that the 6800GT did not run the game flawlessly, no cards have yet to do that. Even with some major gaming rigs the frame rates tend to drop in heavy action. Maybe its not a big enough deal to notice but this game is made for cards that are not out yet.

Go in to your BIOS

Look for the setting called AGP APERTURE SIZE

Increase it to the highest possible.

It doesnt crash. Battlfield is designed to kick you back to your desktop if it doesn't support your video card. I read a lot about it here http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-x-2147-x-x-x There are a lot of bench mark test here. You will see that no system runs it flawlessly. You may not notice it right off, but it is so.

I have an old Geforce4 4000 I robbed from my old PC till I get my new one. Its way to old to run this game and wouldn't be worth the trouble to even get it up and running. I'll just wait till Friday.

its already set to auto which would be 8x for me

While using high-end video cards like the Radeon X850XT and the GeForce 6800 Ultra, we noticed that even though the video cards scored well, we'd rather play with lower settings to maintain frame rates during taxing situations. You could probably get away with 1600x1200 and high quality, but we'd recommend using these cards at around 1280x960, with high-quality settings, to get the best image quality and overall performance. The Radeon X800 XL, which is slightly slower than the Radeon X850 XT, also performs well with a resolution of 1280x960 and high-quality settings. In general, the rule of thumb to take away is: If you have a 16-pipe card, you can crank up the settings to your heart's delight, but you still have to watch the resolution and disable antialiasing.

The story changes once we drop down the 12-pipe GeForce 6800 and Radeon X800 Pro, Trying to run these cards at high resolutions with high quality settings produced poor frame rates. Shifting down to medium quality solved our problems, and it even let us raise the resolution to 1600x1200. You could also reduce the lighting and shadowing settings, and leave other settings at high, to get better image quality and performance.

If you set the rez lower it should be no problem to run the game with the other setting high. What rez are you guys playing in?

ahh ok geforce 4 is kinda old :P

with your new GC it should run fine it can drop frame rate a little in close combat if their are loads of players around but not enough to ruin anything.

fear the jets ^__^

I have myn set to 1024x768 I run all my games at that rez it gives you abit of room to put effects up on high without losing too many frames.

I'll have to join a battle with you next weekend. I don't usually set my rez all the way up either. I would rather run smooth than herky jerky. I really can't wait to get a nice video card. Its been so long, as you can see by what I got.

Sorry man but that's just not true. A high-end card will run it fine, IF it's on a system with enough memory and possibly a fast HD as well. The game does highlight any bottlenecks in a system, true, but it's not all down to the GPU. on a pure graphics side, a 6800GT will do just fine, but of course not with 8xAA and 8xAF turned on at 1280x960. You will however get by comforably with 2x of 4x AA.

I can run it with a Geforce 6600 GT. My problem is what the stupid game loses connection to the server every 10 minutes.. The patch that was suppose to come out at the end of August is coming out at the beginning of October.

I was mainly going by the bench marks posted on Gspot, where if its not running at 100fps, its just not enough, lol. I didn't mean to say that the cards would not run them but that there will be much better performing cards for this game later on.

I got my Radeon X850 pro (not the card I was going to get but I made a last minute choice and its nice) today and I'm running most of the setting on high except for textures and its very amazing. It only belches every now and then but then again that may be server lag. These grafix are amazing!!!!!

Hey Mels, I'll go to war with you.
I usually play late night, about 1 am Eastern time.

I run BF2 on:
P4 2.6
2 GB DDR 400
Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition 256 MB

I have all settings on max quality, 6X anti aliasing. Smoove, baby...smooooove.
Previously I had a Radeon 9800 Pro and 1 GB DDR 400. I had to have the settings at medium to play smoothly. After going to the X800 I still had some texture stuttering and things got dicey when a lot of artillery was goin off around me, tanks rollin in and lots of partical effects... the extra RAM cured that though.

Crash, your first step is to turn shadows and lighting down a tad while pushing the texture quality up a bit. AA is nice if you can jack it way up, but it's really only the icing on the cake.

mels pm me about going to war. brush up on your chopper gunning, 'cause we're goin' friggin' airwolf, buddy.

Anyways i am running BF2 @ med rez on a ATI 9550 Radeon xtacy which by most standards is a pretty crappy card. ive only had problems with 2 games though GTA San Andreas and DS 2. So overall i'm pretty happy with it considering it only cost 60$

That would be cool, I have not had much time to play as of yet so I still suck. I've been playing with the original name - DukeofDeath- yep lame but it wouldn't let me use Ron Jeremy.

Their site was very skimpy for a long time, years, I think there was a schizm in the ranks. I just went back there and it seems pretty orderly. Im going to try find some of the old articles that that almost made me wet my pants, and get fired from work. I worked for an ISP, full of slackers and gamers, we would laugh so hard we had to hide under the cubicles.

Those were also the Something Aweful days, and Jeff K was popular.

You really need to have "the voice" of MARVIN from Old Man Murray in your head when reading rants.

Theyre signing up in Asheron's Call as a big black muscular sailor in only his underwear, and walking around to other online RPG players and patting them on the butt was hilarious.

Any of you remember Seanbaby? Portal of Evil? What about the chick from Crazygrampa? She was Canadian, got lots of hate mail.

I run bf2 at the following settings on; Amd 64 3500 OCed@2.48/6800 GT OCed@385/1075/1 gig ddr ram

VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 4
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 4
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 4
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 2
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 4
VideoSettings.setResolution 1600x1200@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3

Framerate is actually better than at the lower resolutions, at least at 1280x1024 anyway. Average framerate is usually about 40 with dips as low as 20-25 and highs of 75+

Yeah, I make all my own grafix cards out of tooth picks, bubble gum and my own poop. Its the shit! And runs really well.

This game has got on my nerves. Too many screens to load to get to a server and play. Sometimes the wait to connect is fast, sometimes its like surfing zeropaid on a bad day. Not enough killing either. The boards are just too damn huge, some are fun others are boring as it takes to long to find someone to frag. Maybe its just me.

mels try the new f.e.a.r multi player demo thats just come out I think you will like that more then bf2, lots of fragging.

bf2's new patch comes out tomoro(or so EA says) it fixes like 100 differnt things im really hoping one of them is the slow as as a dead cat menus you see a map thats got a few spaces but by the time you have clicked on it and waited for it to unfreeze its full :/

Yeah i hope the patch fixes my lost connection to server and actually gives the guns some kind of accuracy. Im tired of emptying half a clip into someone and end up dieing after they shoot me once.

The Call of Duty 2 single player demo is pretty sweet, one of the awesome parts is that you can shoot someone and they will go down but then when you get near sit up with a pistol or sub machine and start shooting at you. Something i havent seen in a FPS yet and takes some getting used too.

i have a AMD Athlon 64 (3000+) 939 pin with a Sapphire ATI Radeon X800GT (256mb) PCI EXPRESS card, the game does take a long time to load, and i have to run round map at least once for it to load into memory so it is actually playable, but then i only have 512 mb of ram, but am upgrading hoping it will help loading, BUT i have everything on full and after loading, it runs like a dream, smooth as a calm day.
