THE music industry will push for more than $1 billion in damages after its landmark court victory over internet music pirates Kazaa. The Sydney-based internet file-sharing company has had $30 million of its assets frozen as record companies try to recoup some of the estimated $3 billion lost in pirated music. "Given the value of the music ripped off was several billion dollars, the damages claim will be substantial," Music Industry Piracy Investigations spokesman Michael Speck said yesterday. "It's about sending a message to illegal operators that they cannot get away with taking other people's work." The Federal Court ruled on Monday that Kazaa software, which allows users to swap music files for free over the web, had illegally infringed artists' copyright on an unprecedented scale. The RIAA just won't give up. They think it is a victory attacking Kazaa but it is the beginning of a very long struggle. A struggle that I believe will go on for many years. For one, I stopped using Kazaa a long time ago due to the amount of spyware that is placed on your computer. Their are tons of filesharing applications out there. In the time it takes them to shut down another Kazaa like company many more will pop up. The RIAA will never be able to fully recoup their losses and I'm afraid the losses are only going to get bigger.

Not to mention how they can figure out how much they would have made if it had not been for file sharing. Does that include pirating by copying cds? There was music before all these big corporations existed. Maybe you wont get the highly edited and polished music from well crafted bands. But you will still get music from those that play just because they enjoy it. The artist also profit from clothes and parafanalia, advertising music, movies, etc...

You know Kazaa is run by a bunch of morons. First off I would have never allowed anyone to freeze 30 million dollars that belonged to me. Anyone who has a basic knowledge of owning a corporation knows that the only money the MPAA and RIAA can get is whatever sits in the corporation itself. If one studies a corporation one knows that if a corp gets sued, only the money from the corp itself is at risk, not the money of the ceo.

Notice the article clearly says that 30 million dollars of "Kazaa's assets" were frozen. It didn't say anything about the amount of wealth owned by the owners of Kazaa themselves. Why did they leave so much money sitting in their corporate account? I would have only left 100,000.00 in my corporate account and transferred the rest into my own private investments. Then the only thing the MPAA or RIAA could get would be the $100,000.00

Remember people, a corporation is an entity one and of itself. If can do everything a human can do other than make its own decisions.
