ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Internet2, the foremost U.S. advanced networking consortium led by the research and higher education community, today announced that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) joined Internet2 as corporate members. Both leading industry associations plan to collaborate with the Internet2 community to consider innovative content distribution and digital rights management technologies, and to study emerging trends on high-performance networks to enable future business models. "Internet2 networking is an incredibly exciting tool for researchers, technologists and many others interested in developing new technologies, policies and business models for the next generation. Its value now and potential in the future are extraordinary, and we are very pleased to join this diverse community," said Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA. "We look forward to collaborative work with a broad spectrum of Internet2's members to develop new technologies that will enable us to produce and distribute digital content over next generation networks in ways that protect and enhance the value of creative works." One of the prime values of the advanced network infrastructure the Internet2 community has deployed is that it represents the leading-edge of Internet technology and therefore provides a window into the potential of the future of the Internet. Internet2 provides MPAA and RIAA an innovative testbed for examining future networking and secure distribution capabilities not possible on today's commercial Internet. The associations are reviewing the working groups and special interest groups within the Internet2 framework to determine the best opportunities for collaboration. Read the Rest:

Their reason for joining is utter bullshit. Internet2 is and will always be a proprietary network only used by universities. MPAA and RIAA claim they'll use it as a "test bed" for distribution methods. Why can't they use a decent size LAN or the Internet. They just want to stop the warez trading. I wish these organizations would grow some balls and own up to their motives.

Whatever you do, DON'T support Internet 2. It will be fully controlled by corporate interests. Alex Jones at www.infowars.com warned a few months ago that "they" want to shut down Internet and force consumers to switch to a corporate controlled Internet 2. There was a news article here not too long ago that said the United Nations may run the internet. Alex Jones knows what he talking about, everything he says is documented.
The Elite are in a rage because the Internet has empowered us "little people." Did you guys know that while the mainstream news media is in decline, websites like www.infowars.com and www.whatreallyhappened.com are on the rise, beating out some of the largest newstations in the US?
It is the truth. The Internet is bigger than just the P2P revolution. The Internet is changing the world in ways they Elites never wanted. People from all over the globe are now communicating quickly and news is traveling at lightspeed. Digital businesses are being built, creating residual income streams.
Vannevar Bush's dreams have come true. In the next five years they will probably try to run a propaganda campaign on tv telling us how good internet 2 is and how much faster and safer it is than internet 1. Ignore such nonsense. Support Internet 1 at all costs. Our freedom depends on it.

Is that the best you can come up with? I mean, not that the auto industry does anything different--lots of people want to spend $40K on something just because it is new! But not me, and not anyone who agrees with what I have to say.

hmm, the RIAA were sueing people using internet 2 as far back as April....
Given all of this, my guess is that the RIAA is pushing the Internet2 angle mostly for policial and public relations reasons. By painting Internet2 as a separate network, the RIAA can imply that the transfer of infringing files over Internet2 is a new kind of problem requiring new regulation. And by painting Internet2 as a centrally-managed entity, the RIAA can imply that it is more regulable than the rest of the Internet.
