i need to know linux ..is it free? what version is free and how can i get my current internet to run on it through winmini port ppope or wutever....alsoif it is better than windows. i need to have a cd of linuz ready for the day microsoft pulls a bush on us and turns from its half business self to a sell out (more than it is)

Take a look at Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntulinux.org) or Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org). Also Linspire (http://www.linspire.com) comes to mind, or Mepis (http://www.mepis.org). Bear in mind, nothing is free. You can download the .iso for free, but it will take time and lots of mind power to learn properly.

I suggest going to barnes & Noble or Borders or a similar place that sells books on GNU/Linux. Spend about $35.00-$65.00 for a decent book. These also usually come with a disc. Your best bet, if you are clueless is to try this method. You could be a cheap bastard like me and wing everything, but i have a hard head.

Ubuntu will ship yoou a free disc, but it takes a long time.

Linspire isn't free, but if you use this (http://info.linspire.com/freespire/) method before Sept. 6, 2005, you can get it for free. Hope this helps. Linspire is known as 'Linux for newbies".

Don't forget also that you may run into hardware compatibility issues. You may go mad.

Most versions are free. I would suggest Red Hat or Mandrake, possibly Knoppix so you can get an idea of what you're up against before you do something...

Okay just to clarify. These are some good options BUT: if you're looking for redhat, get fedora. Mandrake is now mandriva, and knoppix well. That's still knoppix. But knoppix has never been simple. It's quite chock-full of programs and not just one program per task.

Okay back the topic starter: You should check out web sites such as distrowatch.com for all the different choices. Or close to all ;)

And the distros I reccomend are pocketlinux, for its simple and very straight forward installation, Zenwalk linux, because it is perfect for me, and PCBSD is shaping up to be great. (yes I know BSD isn't linux. But hey, it's just another unix-like operating system... Or so I thought)
