i looked at a lot of help topics on the internet, and i still get slow downloads using bitcomet (even slower before using bitlord). while some people brag about 100+kb/s, im happy if i ever get 20+kb/s. i average about 8kb/s. sometimes, i can be downloading at 1-3kb/s, while im uploading at 40-50kb/s. anyways, i tried a variety of different ways that are said to improve your speeds. i had my global max upload rate set at the default unlimited, but then i was told to use 80% of my upload rate, so i checked it on a bandwidth site, and conifgured my rate accordingly. still, not improving. i heard about listening ports, and how i should add a '1' to make it a number 1 digit longer. well, still same problem. i checked with bitcomet and my windows firewall doesnt conflict with it. anyways, so i was wondering if anyone can give me some direct help to my problem. that would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a router and is it port forwarded? Are you sure you gave your windows firewall permission?

well, i dont have a router. and yes, bitcomet is allowed by my firewall, along with another port i added like another guide told me to, and called it bitcomet. and i did the NAT check or whatever its called, and it says that its okay. the only firewall i have is the windows xp one. oh yeah, and im using SP2.
as far as seeders go, it says under the "seed/peer [all]", one of the files im dl'ing slowly, it says "1/40 [9/2534]". as far as modem goes, im not sure about the type. all i know is that its rogers highspeed internet (seeing as im in canada). if you need anything else, please tell me (speeds, etc.)

Try another client perhaps I just switched to http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ with no problems at all I am currently downloading at 200kps also try looking for downloads with a lot of seeds. The more seeds the faster the download.
Btw welcome to zeropaid

Lookit, if you dont have many seeders you will PROB NOT have much speed.
Wait till youve used your client longer to get a feel for things.
Just go find ANY torrent that has zillion seeders, and good ratio, try it.
Also, dont lead us to believe its bad, if you are also streaming media, or using another client at the sametime.

the thing is that azareus just wont connect. i dl the file, and 10 min later, it still will have the same red face that says that i haven't connected to any users. its totally screwed up.
ok, and i also went to www.dslreports.com/stest and it said:
Your download speed : 601765 bps, or 587 kbps.
A 73.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 101992 bps, or 99 kbps.
for the record, this test was taken in IE while bitcomet was running, and i am aware that the upload speed isnt so hot. i recall taking this test some time ago and it was higher. maybe this is the problem?

No, it would be higher if you werent doint BT at the same time.
Is this your home, business, campus?
You added the listening port for this, right?

last night, one of my torrents peaked at around 90kb/s, which is incredibly high for me. then, it dropped suddenly to 8kb/s, and then picked up and stayed at around 12kb/s. i still dont know why this is happening, and why my upload speed is MUCH higher than my download speed. any further help would be greatly appreciated, as i have yet to find the problem.

Sounds to me like you need to try Shareaza: bittorrent for noobs. It will most likely solve your problem.

i know its not fun to repeat answers, but ive seen other posts, and i havent found any answers that help. im not trying to be difficult, but i still havent been given an answer, just questions. i understand that its important to get a lot of information to answer my problem, but i think that i have given enough information on my situation, and i don't personally think switching to another client will help.

Right, so this is easy to handle
A quick search for 4226 allowed me to find my last post and this:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/lvllord/download-mirror.htm
Patcher Version 2.23d English (ZIP incl. changelog) (http://mitglied.lycos.de/lvllord/EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip)
MD5 (http://mitglied.lycos.de/lvllord/EvID4226Patch223d-en.md5): f52713e1470315935f4af3d2c55684a5
Download that, and run it. We all have varying opinions on what is a good value, I set mine at 1,000 or . . or was it 10,000?
Anyways, get it downloaded and installed, we can change the values later
cheers

alright. done. it said something about changing limit to 50 or something like that from the original 10. after it told me to reboot. however, now im worried because i did it while bitcomet was running. hope that doesn't screw things up.
Krell
September 2nd, 2005, 12:15 PM
Noooo, no worries there. It did ask you if you wanted to keep the original file, and you said NO and rebooted, thats all it took.
The next time you re run this, I think theres a C option for Change *doing from memory*
You can then type in the number that you want, and reboot again.
I advise trying only a few torrents at a time, to get a feel for this and benchmark it, then work your way up.
Good luck with this!

i know i shouldnt be bringing up old topics, but i may have been counting my chickens before they hatched. by the time i had gotten this information, i had already finished my dl. well, that was a long 9 days ago. i havent used bittorrent until today to download something else. i still followed instructions and gave rep for the good advice from Krell. anyways, im here again to ask for any OTHER suggestions that were not included. one thing that i should state: bearshare, my old P2P, worked once but now doesnt connect. my second choice P2P, limewire, is connecting, but is also slow. so maybe its my internet provider? i dont know.

Are you on a college campus, where are you, and what do you use to get internet? ISP?
Next, You realize that each application needs to be configured individually. So if yu set ONE client to not use max uplad bandwidth, you have to do it for the others ones also.
Secondly, from a FRESH reboot, with no other apps running, I want you to use dslreports bandwidth test, look it up. Clear your browser cache, run the tests, then Paste the results in so we can see what yuor maximum possibility is.

Rogers @ home throttles their Bandwidth
You might not have a software prob my friend it might just be a shitty provider.
Shaw, Rogers, Videotron all do this

to be fair, i didnt use his name in the sentence. yeah but the thing is that i once had great bearshare speeds. maybe their current rise to powerallowed them to piss on the average consumer. oh well, it could be worse.

You could try proxying thru a http tunnel. That way the packets show up as http, which will help with throttling issues.

September 15th, 2005, 07:43 PM
how wouldi be able to do whatever it is that you are talking about?
zarquon
September 15th, 2005, 08:09 PM
Use a program like http-tunnel, and create a socks proxy that you can run your p2p traffic through. It will then go through port 80 and the data shows up as web traffic, so your isp wont throttle it.

September 15th, 2005, 09:08 PM
i have version 3.4, i understand the concept of what you just told me. all i have to ask is how to do that exactly. it would also help if i knew what a sock proxy whatever is.
zarquon
September 16th, 2005, 07:25 AM
http://en.wikipedia.irg/wiki/socks
configure -> auto detect. Start.
Then you can connect to the socks proxy with 127.0.0.1 port 1080

i connected to 127.0.0.1 port 1080 (added) and left it running in the taskbar. now what, i can just run any application and make it faster for my situation? is this purely P2P or will this make my torrents faster as well?

No, just start the application without entering the ip. Then you use the p2p client, bt or whatever and configure it to connect to the http-tunnel, which is running on 127.0.0.1 port 1080.
