THere are a lot of chat "thingies" out there. The best of course are the originals:Yahoo,MSN,ICQ,and AIM.If you want a chat client that can connect to all of them choose trillian right now.I use praize instant messener because I'm pretty religious and this fits me pretty well.... Praize.com

Trillian is futile.
Jabber supports multiple transports (ICQ, AIM, IRC, MSN, Yahoo) and secure (i.e. encrypted) chat over SSL just like Trillian
BUT...
Jabber is taking a more active role in unifying chat: they're currently working with the IETF to establish a chatting standard.
Jabber has its own network, so you don't have to use any of the proprietary ones!
With Jabber you're not tied to 1 client. There are MANY clients (and a few different servers) available so you can choose what you like.
Jabber is based on open standards so you can roll your own client, server, bot, transport, etc.
Jabber communicates using XML (AFAIK, Trillian is only SKINNABLE using XML), making it totally extendable.
Most Jabber clients are FREE! There's nothing to say that you (or someone else) can charge for a client, but you don't have to shell out $25 to get away from spyware/adware.
ALL YOUR IM ARE BELONG TO US.

Trillian all the way,
a friend of mine made an interesting comment about the two:
"AOL's response to trillian is that its not true system intergration, it just hacks into the servers, AOL's response to jabber is......fuck you"

MorningSon, that sounds familiar. In fact, "fuck you" sounds ~exactly~ like what Monkey$oft said to Linux initially. Now they're jumping through hoops just to be mentioned in the same sentence!
One by one, users are wisening up and migrating to open systems. The net flux is from closed systems toward open ones, not the other way around.
Open systems will eventually obliterate proprietary ones. Embrace them or be left behind.

personaly i used jabber and it doesnt impress me
I think Trillian is more stable and more complete then Jabber
The skining is much better and the results looks even better then jabber
Trillia has Secure IM Encryption
Trillian has plugins wqich is way better since it will help trillian evolve and not become bloatware. You can decide what to add and not to add, and there are some awsome plugins out there.
Soon the SDK will support the ablity to add new mediums, this means that jabber could soon be part of trillian.

You can get it from download.com . The original question said "small", and you'll not find one smaller or easier on system resources. Easy Message is in a new development cycle leading up to a 3.0 release with plenty new features. 239,433 really good bytes! :shy

Gaim or mirandaicq those are great! They support jabber and all kinds! Miranda IM here (http://miranda-icq.sourceforge.net) and gaim. (http://gaim.sf.net) Quite good and open source! Trillian also used some of gaims source code :) and it was also the Sourceforge project of the year!:devil
