So have I Synmantec Norton Internet Security, and I downloaded Ares.
It connects to Ares fine, and I can search fine. However, I can't download, or even going into the chat rooms. I've tried shutting off the firewall.. but I assume something is still working in the background. I just want to know how I can configure Ares, or my firewall to let eachother work.. I've tried quite a few of things. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have norton worm protection active too. If so, remove ares from the allowences list and open ares and then you should get a popup saying "block / unblock". Also remove ares from the firewall allowences and do the same as above. This happens with a lot of programs, it's like norton should be install before anything else on the computer. Only a minor bug you'd expect norton to fix!

Okay.. I tried doing what you said.. but to be honest.. I'm not sure what it is to do.. I don't see any worm protection thing.. now do i know where the allowances list is. But I did find a list, and I did take off Ares, but I received no other prompt when i started it back up..

Ok then add ares to the firewall allowences once again, but this time add the ports ares uses to the firewall exception list too, they are TCP-15000 and UDP-15000. Connections will be allowed now and your downloads should run.

Well, I did that, yet still no luck.. I can detect users from my downloads. But the transfer never actually begins. I just purchased this computer, so I'm not to familiar with Norton, it came with it. So I don't know how to add those ports to Norton (I added them to the windows firewall though) I've tried allowing it, and disabling it, yet, files still arn't being transfered. The weird part is, when I first downloaded Ares (Yesterday) I needed to download some software, and it did that fine, then I think I updated Norton, and then transfers ceased.

Disable, norton firewall completely, enable the xp firewall, add ares the program, add the port UDP 15000 and add the port TCP 15000. Make sure they are your ports in the ares settings.

Okay, this is beginning to get ridiculous and unexplainable. I got frustrated so I uninstalled norton altogether, I did exactly what you said above, and when I started Ares, it gave me the reconfigure prompt for firewall, I accepted, I changed the transfer port to 15000 (was previously 33*** something or other) Closed it, reopened it, restarted. Still no luck.

Uses the ports that were configured in ares already - put them in the firewall exception list, I got the ports (15000) off google.

Okay, well I forgot the original ports, but my friend had 29726.. which is different then mine. I changed it to that however, and added those to the port list.
