Whan is the final 3.0 coming out? And is the current beta any good at all? what's it like in terms of

- number of users
- speed
- file availability
- resume/swarm/etc.

Come on, there must be someone using it out there :mellow

winmx is fast, but the bad thing about it is definitely the interface.....

right now, the current version of WinMX isn't all that great, and rumors say Sony has been targeting it, so I'm not too keen on sticking with WinMX

I have been playing with both versions (2.8 and 3), and winmx 2.8 is still the one version I use most the time. It tends to be more reliable and better search results. The winmx 3 is better in terms the multi-point dl, but due to low number ppl connected you don't get too many opportunities for multi-point dls. :tol

3.0 is actually pretty good, most of the problems with it are open/slavanap related.

I have noticed some difficulties remotely queueing on opennap servers. The multi-source d/ls only work on the wpnp network, but they can be very effective. As the 2.6 community migrates to the final version of 3.0 (when it comes out) multi -source will be a very good addition. May actually significantly reduce the need for opennap servers. And often you skip the whole busy(queueable) thing and go straight into remote queue.

Other features that I like is the wav file for incoming msgs.

I think that when WinMX 3.0 does come out it will be one of the most versatile and powerful p2p clients out there. And it has a large robust userbase. The only thing missing is the ability to limit "leeches" access to whatever you have shared.

Whats all that negative talking about 3.0 about? Remember its still beta (even s so close to release) and well as vladd said most problems lay within opennap and that will be sorted on release since the winmx user database will be much bigger then.
And now something completely unrelated.

I think the new forums are great, and WinMX is bad, really bad.

I agree that the UI needs a total overhaul, but I still look forward to testing the final version 3.0.

If multi-source d/l is as good as it seems in the beta vesions (beta userbase to small to get a really good idea how helpful it will be). WinMX will establish itself as a premier p2p prog.

It has a large userbase, less 56k than fasttrak . When people complain its about queues and speed, not search results. People complain about seing it, but not being able to d/l it. So the userbase and filebase are both good in winmx, Speeding up d/ls will help alleviate this issue. So the only thing Frontcode needs to do now is enpower the users to limit access of files from those that share little or nothing. This could apply to upload slots and files shared. The freeloader issue needs some resolution in many p2p communities. And the sooner its done the better for all p2p.

I know Opennap is an evolutionary dead end, but it still serves some purpose. But the new winmx is in the WPNP network.

There are other p2p progs that I use,now that Gnucleus has Supernodes (and enough people are running the new version). I really like the advantages it offers of multi-source d/ls. But gnutella is even more riddled with leechs. No browse and msging are otehr probs.

I've always liked direct connect , bc it had sharing requirements and u/l slot minimuims. But without multi source its slow. Resume could have been made alot easier, manually rename a file to resume (even with slight differences) and size is listed by MB not bytes are not good issues. But the leech prob isnt really an issue. Also, GLO-search is a handy tool to search many hubs.

Kazaa is gonna self destruct, so not even worth mentioning really. USe kazaalite like there is no tomorrow, Thats a company on a collision course.

So i guess well see when 3.0 comes out, whenver that is. at least give us a beta 9.

And psychotronic420, i had a good 420? what bout u?

Basically winmx isnt that great yet cause it hasnt got its user database. The p2p part of it is great in my opinion, as said before just opennap sucks (sorry repeating vladd here;)
Anyway just wait for the final and then start complaining, its in to early stages still...

For now Im using aduiogalaxy anyway... brilliant proggie.
It uses up a bit more time to get started with (join groups talk to people to get in...) but as soon you got into some groups you can just request music in it and well you get LOADS of rare/new stuff and its normally good aswell since people choose what to send you. You can find almost anything with its search aswell.
It automatically downloads for you (no need to care about resume and so on...), you gotta share some amount of files to get more then one dl at a time and cant stop people uploading...
That means there arent many leechers and you easily get what you want...
Normally never need to wait long, only if its so rare/new that only 1 or 2 people have it...
It definitely is one of the best things out there.
There are two drawbacks to it tho, for once it comes with that stupid annoying gator ad ware stuff... and you cant share your songs with track numbers (ag names them for you... well using id3tag, this allows more combatibility/multisource tho) And then there are a lot of wrapped or zipped albums out there anyway.

Anyway it IS a really good proggie and even worth to live with gator adware for. (Can get rid of it by buying gold version, 2.95$ a month, you get faster servers and some priorities with it...)

:shy Hi Shannon, I am using win beta now and it isnt all that bad. Some of the other members might be able to help,if you tell them what your operating sys is. Also set for longer timeouts. Firewall settings seem to be a bit critical, but the folks on here seem to have a lot of knowledge. PS sorry if this doesnt look or sound right but this is my first time on here.
Good Luck

Myself I've always thought audiogalaxy could launch a buisness plan that would work because they aren't asking much, do give you more than just search results (groups, message board sort of ect) and they've attracted a nice mostly non leeching user base by only going with mp3's.

not really saying much but I find audiogalaxy was pretty smart in their buisness model and I think if they can keep the free version the way it is and make the paid one even better than now they'd be onto something.

I think their deveopment is way too slow and it hinders their progress. It also makes users lose faith in them. We are impatient and usually go somewhere else if things don't happen quick enough. It seems to me they have been in beta testing way too long. Same with Blubster and AudioGnome.

Is there a way to not show the clients you are downloading from on the transfer screen, takes up too much room, the purge users button is cool, but they should put an +next to the downloading file so you have the option of droping down the file to see what users you are downloading from.

The lack of users on the beta version is really the only thing holding it back from exploding popularity wise. Then again it is a beta version so its not supposed to be huge.

Wolfie
April 28th, 2002, 01:22 AM
That's understandable since the majority of winmx users are not expert users, therefore they tend not to use the beta and wait for the final version to come out.
