I have both an ATI card and an nVidia and they both work great. But I am gonna buy a new ATI x700 pro in about 2 weeks. Its just a great card at a nice price. Thats what it comes down too these days.

That all may be true but that doesn't help my PC any. lol Rigtht now as far as the PC market is concerned, I think the ATI is a better buy, but thats just my opinion from shopping around these last few weeks.

but you also have to refinance your house to buy it...

Yea, I think you have to take in more factors than what the fastest card is. I mean most people will not need all that because their PC will be a bottle neck anyways and games will run just fine on a lesser card. Many things need to be thought about when talking about what card you like more. nVidia makes great products no doubt though.

If I had the money I would get the 7800GTX or whatever it is because it is far superior. If I had that money I would probably build a pc that wouldnt be a bottleneck for the card either. But this is not the case. If I actually had SOME money I would probably do what elvis here is doing and get a x700 or similar but as I do not have the some money I am stuck with the 9600PRO.

but you also have to refinance your house to buy it...Why would you need a house when you could also buy the best graphics card available at this moment? :icon_clow
Theirby you can no longer see that the house which your graphics card shows is not real. :icon_geek

My new PC is shaping up slowly but surely,
OK I know its not the best, but I wanted a good machine without spending a mint. I think it will do fine for the limited gaming I do and to serve files.
So far,
AMD 64 3000+ 800mgz FSB
1GB DDR PC-3200 Ram (Iwanted 2 gigs but they only had one stick left!)
Crappy nVidia GeForce4 4000 I robbed from old PC, soon to be replaced
160G seagate HD
Audigy soudcard I robbed from old PC, still a fine card
Over all Im happy with its performance and I'm really proud because I built it! I would like to start another project maybe after this one but I dought I will. It was fun to do though. I can't wait to get a kicking video card to see what she'll do.

I like nVidia because of their superior driver support.

nVidia sounds cooler. ATI sounds like an infection. No honestly, nVidiaa works a whole lot better IMHO.

the 7800gtx is a rip off. look at the specs on the 7800, and a 6800 ultra that is $200 cheaper. memory speed, pixels per second, all the same. Tom's hardware reviewed it, and it didn't do much better than the 6800. Even in SLI, only a 1-2 fps difference.
I have a 6600gt that is SLI capable, but i think its a waste of money. when i first built my computer, i wanted to do SLI, but decided to invest in a nice LCD screen, another HDD, or more ram. my frame rate on hl2, UT2k4, far cry, all run just fine.
i will always go with Nvidia for video cards. ATI never seems to make a card better than Nvidia, before they blow them away with a new one a week later.

My last couple have been ATI, but I'll go where the best card is at the time... which happened to be Radeon X800 XT Platinum. MMMMmmm MMmmmm.... creamy smooth! 6X AA on everything.

Nvidia is overated all together in my opinion. The reason they are still highly regarded was because back in the day ati had horrible drivers wich crippled performance. But now days ati is just as good. Quite frankly just go by price. My system is very similar to mels with a ati x700 and its very stable, runs games great no problems here.

ATI to nVidia is just like AMD to Intel. ATI and AMD may be more powerful but nVidia and Intel just seem to be always in new computers you buy, unlike the other two which are more often bought of the shelf which means from popularity nVidia and Intel win. I honestly prefer these two... why? Because I have always bought store made computers (Hey, I'm only 18) and thats what I always get. Right now I'm looking at a nVidia label!

Just because they are common really means nothing... both are so similar just get whatever has the best price really. The popularity just depends on the history of the companies, Intel was always big so it has more contracts, but AMD is eating away at their market share piece by piece.
And its funny because I have had homemade computers for the last 8 years or so, and every one was AMD and ATI. ;)
