For what?

They both make fine coasters. Stack them on top of one another for double-coaster action!

I ditched Windows in '98, never looked back. I believe if Windows games aren't important to you and you are interested in computers, you should switch to Linux by all means.

I like linux, it has a better IP stack for downloading from p2p. Its also much more secure. You have no idea how much i hate being hacked by spyware.

I like Windows XP SP1 the best... to get hacked. There are more unpatched holes for 2000 and xp pre sp2 than any other operating system. Its becase so many holes where patched in sp2. The easyist way to find a vuln is from an exploit. (thats from the book "Exploiting software: how to break code"). Your machine has probably been cluster f*ed by now.

Totally

Linux and Windows is as secure as its users. those who use their computers with wreckless abandon will wake up with a major headache (so I'm told).

IP tables in nice in for GNU/*nix if you knoew how to use it.
XP has a crappy firewall, that once set up properly can provide a bit of security.

I find that the most security you will ever find is using good common sense.

I like free operating systems because they are free (as in freedom and beer). Please also, Linux is a kernal, not an operating system, technically. GNU/Linux can be considered an OS if it is GNU. The best way to put is is [distro of choice]-based on Linux.

The statement about being easy to fix is VERY false. Linux can be much easier to fix, since determining your problem is so much more specific!

Well after following a rather large thread on this topic on another site, the big difference that I can see is that windows does more handholding, as the way of doing things in linux is totally different.

KDE or Gnome is more like it!

Well after following a rather large thread on this topic on another site, the big difference that I can see is that windows does more handholding, as the way of doing things in linux is totally different.

This is true, but Windows also limits what power you as a user have. I prefer to be the smart one over the machine, just like as with an automobile. To me the machine is just an extension of my own mind. Windows is Windows, the one that Gates and company designed. Linux is a kernel +whatever in the heck you want it to be. It is totally customizable and the sky truly is the limit. The real limit is what the user decides to actually learn how to do. Bill Gates and Co. have already decided for you what Windows can/will do. Can you compile your own custom Windows NT kernel to fit your specific hardware, making your computer system completely optimised to your hardware? Of course not. Can Linux? Yep.

Linux is not hard, especially with the desktop environments available, not to mention worldwide community support. Oh yeah, Linux is also about $200.00 less to install than Windows.

A good disrto that is hot right now is Ubuntu which features the Gnome DE. For KDE users, there is a version which defaults to KDE called Kubuntu. Both are the same core os and you can install KDE or Gnome on either. They are a Linux distro designed to fit on a single CD, but there are literally 1000s of packages that can be very easily installed via apt-get or its gui , Synaptic. It truly is very easy, and the community is very humble and considerate towards newbies. I highly suggest to anyone who wants to learn Linux, but doesn't want to have Linspire or another corporate Linux to try it for free. They will even ship you a manufacured CD, free of charge, including shipping. They will even give you a hundred if you ask! They did for me at least. I've got more coming. (K)Ubuntu is ported to x86 (intel), PPC (mac) and AMD 64 architectures. So, if you have an older Pentium II or older mac lying around, why not test it out? You cna even network it with your current Windows machine, or better yet use your (K)Ubuntu box as a file server!

Note: October 15, 2005 is the release date for their newest release (K)Ubuntu 5.10.

I've just been on a training course at Sun for the Soalris 10 operating system, I could barely tell the difference between 10 and 8, back at work now using 8 again and i still can't remember any major differences.

For home use I believe that windows currently is the only company that makes it easy enough for the everyday user, in a technical environment, then linux or unix based operating systems are the way to go.

I still use Windows XP SP1. I tried SP2 just a couple of days ago. Not all of the updates for SP2 would load. Two of them failed. I think Microsoft Should have stay with Windows XP SP1 and not gome to SP2. Big mistake as far as I am concerned, Not all my programs I use work with SP2 so I went back to SP1. They should have got that to perfection before going to SP2 and Vista as far as I am concerned PEACE YAH ALL
